Excellent work transforming the bird house into a barn. Personally I just would have darkened it slightly and changed its color as well to match either the green or brownish tones in your scene. Other than those personal preference nit picks, I see nothing to suggest for improvements. I also see where the original bird is hiding. :-)

I understand what you are saying and I did try things sort of like that. The problem is that it started really NOT looking like the birdhouse. I took the roof from the source and Perspective Warped it onto the side and the front of the barn/birdhouse and turned it brown. I did try Curves on it to make it lighter/darker, and to change the colors. I really liked it but I thought it started to lose the look of the source and also it started looking like I had just downloaded a wood texture and slapped it on there. I did like it better brown, and for "art sake" I would have kept it brown but I felt for this contest I didn't want to "lose" the source image. It was a really hard call for me at that point and I decided to ditch the brown wood look and stay more true to the source image. I do like the brown shed and it doesn't lose the look of the source image at all. You can still tell its the same "house".

I dunno man. Maybe you are right. Making these things you have so many twists and turns and all kinds of direction to get where you are going. Should I make the sky Blue? Should it be grey? Should it have lots of clouds? Not many clouds? Should the sky source be photographed from underneath? Should it have a strong sunlight coming through it? Should it be warm? Cool? I mean even doing the clouds there are countless things you can do and so many choices. With the color of the house, perhaps it would have been better brown or green or some other earth-tone as you say (I think you are right). But I chose a different path for perhaps the wrong reason. Maybe that was a mistake. I've made Photoshops that I've beat on with a hammer and chisel, and beat on it, and beat on it, and they just never get that UMPH!! Then you try something else and all of the sudden it comes to life!! Sometimes little things can make a difference. It just finding them. Perhaps that simple brown color would have taken the Chop up a notch. :D

Haha here is even an earlier version where I added more slats of wood by just taking a black line thing (the black between the wood) from the roof.
