Today, we are going to do something different. Rather than giving you a theme to work with, you are given a source photo.

This source photo is one of a birdhouse, with a bird on top. It was suggested by Kyricom on Pxleyes 4 years ago:

Your goal is to manipulate the photo in any way you want and turn it into a work of art. You can use Photoshop or any other digital image manipulation software.

Bird house source photo
— Bird house source photo —

You can find a high resolution version HERE

Be creative, and let's do some old school photo manipulations!

PS: It's very important to vote on every entry, the more votes we get, the more accurate the rankings will be. Also, when you see something on someone's entry that can be improved, let them know. That way, we can learn new skills from each other!

Good luck

The Barn created by Rubber-Ray

Can you find the bird that was on top of the birdhouse? . Source images are here https://i.ibb.co/qY73KkJ/Birdhouse-sources.jpg

Excellent work transforming the bird house into a barn. Personally I just would have darkened it slightly and changed its color as well to match either the green or brownish tones in your scene. Other than those personal preference nit picks, I see nothing to suggest for improvements. I also see where the original bird is hiding. :-)

Rubber-Ray avatarLevel 11Gold award
Rubber-Ray replied to Skyangel :

I understand what you are saying and I did try things sort of like that. The problem is that it started really NOT looking like the birdhouse. I took the roof from the source and Perspective Warped it onto the side and the front of the barn/birdhouse and turned it brown. I did try Curves on it to make it lighter/darker, and to change the colors. I really liked it but I thought it started to lose the look of the source and also it started looking like I had just downloaded a wood texture and slapped it on there. I did like it better brown, and for "art sake" I would have kept it brown but I felt for this contest I didn't want to "lose" the source image. It was a really hard call for me at that point and I decided to ditch the brown wood look and stay more true to the source image. In the end I still used those pieces of wood at add some wood texture to the front and the side. Here https://i.ibb.co/vZgt1kd/test-brown.jpg and https://i.ibb.co/02sDWNP/roof-piece.png

Skyangel avatarLevel 15
Skyangel replied to Rubber-Ray :

I do like the brown shed and it doesn't lose the look of the source image at all. You can still tell its the same "house".

Rubber-Ray avatarLevel 11
Rubber-Ray replied to Skyangel :

I dunno man. Maybe you are right. Making these things you have so many twists and turns and all kinds of direction to get where you are going. Should I make the sky Blue? Should it be grey? Should it have lots of clouds? Not many clouds? Should the sky source be photographed from underneath? Should it have a strong sunlight coming through it? Should it be warm? Cool? I mean even doing the clouds there are countless things you can do and so many choices. With the color of the house, perhaps it would have been better brown or green or some other earth-tone as you say (I think you are right). But I chose a different path for perhaps the wrong reason. Maybe that was a mistake. I've made Photoshops that I've beat on with a hammer and chisel, and beat on it, and beat on it, and they just never get that UMPH!! Then you try something else and all of the sudden it comes to life!! Sometimes little things can make a difference. It just finding them. Perhaps that simple brown color would have taken the Chop up a notch. :D

Skyangel avatarLevel 15

It wouldn't have made any difference to your win anyway. You won by a mile.

Haha here is even an earlier version where I added more slats of wood by just taking a black line thing (the black between the wood) from the roof. I was going to make it lifting off from the ground but I went in a different direction and went with the pulled up grass Chop. Too many choices. https://i.ibb.co/54114J2/flying-house.jpg

Hi George. This was a cool Chop and a cool scene. I rated it highly based on that. I did feel the water was lacking a bit. Check out some tutorials on using Displacement Maps for making water. It's a really weird technique. You can make your own Displacement Map if you like and they end up looking like this https://www.deviantart.com/edchambo/art/Water-Displacement-map-194891272. Also, a cool filter for making water is called "Flood 2" by Flamingpear http://www.flamingpear.com/flood-2.html It's a trial version but I have had it for 2 months and it hasn't expired. I have yet to use it for real, other than just messing around a bit, but I have seen tutorials of someone using it and it seems pretty cool. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=40jQrKhA_UQ

You took on quite a difficult challenge to make something totally different from the source photo. It takes ages with all the pre planning and deciding which section you can warp into something else. You did a great job with the eggs and the basket but the bunny made from bird feathers needs a bit of refining. I still see blue outlines from the sky around its face and ears. However, that's just a small nit pik in case you are hoping for suggestions for improvement. Overall, its a commendable effort. Well done.

Chalty669 avatarLevel 9
Chalty669 replied to Skyangel :

Thanks for taking the time to look into the details. The blue is actually added and not from the background. The goal was to add a clipping light from the blue light source on the right. Perhaps I overplayed with the lighting and fell short on this one.

Skyangel replied to Chalty669 :

Now that you explained it, I see what you were trying to achieve. The following tutorial is very helpful when it comes to creating backlighting. You might already be aware of this technique but I am sure it will be helpful for anyone else who wants to achieve a backlit effect.

Thank you very much for posting the tutorial, itโ€™s very informative. My main editing device right now is actually an iPad with pro create, so I lack many of the tools I previously used with photoshop. Hoping for a new computer this year. I actually created my own technique for lighting many years ago. Itโ€™s very similar to the paint layer in your video. The difference is I clip the layer directly to the subject, fill the layer with black, and set the layer mode to color dodge. I then paint with color and the clipping mask makes sure everything stays in line. Honestly I didnโ€™t even know the name of the effect I was describing, your video I enlightened me. I now know that I was trying to create rim lighting.
