It's time to visit your favourite city, because we're going to do some urban landscape photography! Architectural marvels, street views, metropolises and portraits of life in the city. It's all fitting for this contest, as long as the photo is captured from above. In particular, anything above ground level.

Photographing from an altitude allows you to give a nice extra touch to your photos. So, find a way to get high up in a building, climb a pole, or even use a drone to take your photo! Make sure it's clearly visible that the photo was taken from above by having the urban landscape show under an angle.

Long exposure is an allowed technique for this contest. It's often used in urban photos. The 'leading lines' technique from a previous contest is a handy technique as well. In this video from Tom Mackie, you can see an example from urban landscape photography that uses both techniques:

If you are new to urban photography, here you can find an excellent article from "Digital Photography School" with a multitude of handy tips and tricks.

Good luck!

PS: Try to vote on all entries in the contest. The more votes we get, the more accurate the rankings will be. Also, when you see something on someone's entry that can be improved, let them know. That way, we can learn new skills from each other!

PS 2: Ideas for future contests can be submitted here. The best ideas will be picked and turned into a contest. Make sure to clearly define the rules and objectives of the contest.

Lovely that you captured that turret as your main focal point and it does pull on the eye. Because you have a great dof aperture we can see beyond into the chaos of rooftops that look unfinished and to the satellite dishes. This is urban living at an uncomfortable level. It is a very interesting and educational photograph. I understand that they do not finish rooftops for if they do then they have to pay tax, so many buildings remain unfinished. Thank you for taking us on a little journey through your lens.

There is so much to see in this image. For one I can see it is almost 12:30 and it is overcast, the streets are wet! Life continues in Morlaix as we see people have set up their kiosks and a gazebo graces this town where in the summer there is entertainment, oui? The buildings all have a history to tell, they are so quaint and each one has a history to share with us. My husband and I studied your post in full resolution drinking in the life that you have depicted through your lens. It is a place we would love to travel to, to photograph and eat what Morlaix has to offer. Photographically the image is well balanced providing a lot of sharp and detailed points of interest, nice natural colours and good tonal range giving it a crisp pop. It is a beautiful landscape photograph of a town that hopefully will soon be a-buzz with life. Thank you for this mini trip to Morlaix.

The energy from this lively post can be felt. Because of your fast shutter speed, you have captured (frozen) the gay movement of the jubilant youth. Interesting how all the older folk are enjoying their frolicking on the periphery whilst watching them. Your image is so sharp that it looks like you used a pencil sketch overlay, did you? I love how the diagonal lead lines lead the eye towards those buildings in the distance. Showing great dof, natural saturation, nicely composed, a solid city landscape photo which I enjoyed viewing.

Hightree avatarLevel 7
Hightree replied to Olga.L :

"pencil sketch overlay"? Not sure what that is. I did a bit of "High Definition" to highlight the sharp, angular edges of the buildings to contrast them with the fractal configurations of the rain trees; a kind of interplay of the ultra urban setting of metropolitan Singapore and the old colonial one as represented by the gigantic, immaculate lawn of the playing field, which is a classic feature of all British colonies everywhere.

I see you also added a bit of a glowing border to this image. The colours and mist/glow manipulation give a very atmospheric image of an exotic landscape. Personally, I would not have minded seeing a bit more of the landscape, but that is just me.

MyMindsEye avatarLevel 11
MyMindsEye replied to Olga.L :

Thank you for the comment. I appreciate your recognition.
As you pointed out, some after shot manipulation has evoked some sleepy atmosphere to this shot. The original itself was some what sub-par but I really liked the composition and felt it needed some enhancing. Most of the image is as nature intended just richened up a bit. On my screen, tilting forward lightens the landscape a bit but, the dimness is intentional for effect.
Cheers!
