In the last few days it has been freezing consistently here in Belgium and the neighbouring countries. This means the snow from last week doesn't melt and we can still enjoy beautiful snowy landscapes everywhere!

Us people in the Northern hemisphere can use this opportunity to go on walks and hikes with our camera gear, get creative and capture what we see! In this contest, you can showcase these photos and have others vote on them.

You may of course use pictures you have taken in the past (especially those who don't have winter now), but see if you can come up with something unique, something you haven't done before. Challenge yourself!

To get some inspiration, have a look at this winter sports contest we had on Pxleyes 12 years ago, which was won by friiskiwi with this entry:

Friiskiwi won the winter sports contest
— Friiskiwi won the winter sports contest —

In this contest, you are not limited to sports. Any photo in which you can easily tell that it's winter, is allowed.

Important to mention: starting from this contest, entries can be voted on with a 5-100 scale. This in contrast with the previous method, which was just liking the entry. This way we can achieve more accurate results.

Good luck!

There is a nice feeling of warmth that is generated by the setting sun and placed against hues of cold blues it meshes well to give a feeling that change is coming. There is a nice tonal range with details seen in the shadow areas. The POV is not at "belly button" level but taken from above which adds interest to this image.

A very majestic structure surrounded by equally grand "old" trees framing the house nicely. The compositional style giving much foreground sweeps us up giving the feeling of a splendid entrance to another world and another time. The pastel coloured skies give a softness to a rock-solid building that is in good focus. Your aperture used gives a sharp image through the planes and makes for a very enjoyable view.

What wonderful "photographer's" eye you have for juxtaposition. Those tiny houses against those naked and tall trees is a delight to see. Sharp "as a woman's tongue" is this image and colour saturation is rich with good tonal contrasts. That piece of the driveway in the lower-left could be easily cloned out and filled in with snow. Loved this....two thumbs up!

An all-encompassing image taking in a vast range from the top of the hill, into the valley and beyond. YOur aperture captured that focal anchor well with detail showing and softening through the background adding to a feeling of mist, coldness, a blustery winter day. Composed with attention to the rule of 3's gives us viewers a very satisfying feel in studying this photograph.

hibernation

A walk in the woods

Keeping this in natural colours the photographer has kept it warm in spite of the snow. It is a well exposed photograph showing details in the snow. That little piece of wood right on the margin line (viewers L) could have been cloned out ...when you have objects like that on the margin line our brains go there are try to finish the object in our minds and then we leave the photograph instead of lingering longer within the image. I love the warm hues of the benches that are mirrored by the colour of the branches laden with snow. There is a feeling of impermanence which draws the viewer into your story of hibernation.

Olga-Leskiw-Suzuki avatarLevel 14
Olga-Leskiw-Suzuki says:

A photograph that welcomes us into its depth. We want to walk along this path which shows good detail in the shadows of the snow. The image is sharp through all the planes, you chose a good aperture that clearly gets the viewer tangled up into the branches of the trees along this path. Especially lovely is the pastel blue hue in the sky which then renders the branches below it a soft magenta hue and to my eye this is the "icing" of this very well baked cake! Well seen and well shot.

What is there NOT to love about Oscar.? ? ? The photograph taken from the POV from above gives him a humble feel which adds to the knowledge that we all know our friendship with Oscar is fleeting. Technically a well-done image with good saturation/sharpness on the snowman, good colours and very artistically the monotone background was a nice touch..... compound that with a shallow depth of field and Oscar embraces us with a feeling of fun during dismal times! Thank you for this post.

Very easily this photograph could be a poster for "HOPE". Will it be a happier spring/summer? We can only hope but this cheery yellow bloom inspires that feeling in our hearts. Colours grab our emotions and yellow which is strong is attention-grabbing in warmth and is full of energy. Yellow is also very easy to overexpose and you have not done this for we can see detail on the bloom. Using a shallow depth of field the background is lost and due to your POV you have come down low to focus on that what you want to show us....hope. A lovely image that is well composed, tightly cropped and a joy to view, thank you..

This image is very anthropomorphic to my eyes....the emotion of a very tired entity coming out of the water is the strong feeling one receives. The patterns are sharp thanks to your aperture reading and a part of me wonders how this would have looked in monochome as b/w photography focuses on patterns and you have mega patterning. Ohh , if this tree could talk what stories it would share with us. Good eyes for seeing this and it is nicely composed and well balanced.

Frozen

My hometown

Because of your strong gray bias this photograph does feel frozen. Oftentimes, in photo exhibitions, a title will make or break a sale of an image and your title would sell this photograph in a heartbeat! There is a dreamy quality that helps to tell the story of frozen. You seem to have left some warm colour in through the bushes and brick wall, this warms the overall photograph. A complete black and white would have been an interesting presentation to study.

Olga-Leskiw-Suzuki avatarLevel 14
Olga-Leskiw-Suzuki says:

A solid shot, well contrasted but had you taken out all colour the image would have had a stronger statement as the colours tend to distract.....a very subjective opinion. I like your crop in keeping the treetops in place. It is a welcoming image.

Olga-Leskiw-Suzuki avatarLevel 14
Olga-Leskiw-Suzuki says:

An aesthetic piece showing us the beauty not only of snow but of red blossoms persevering. Your POV is creative and the presentation is well balanced with the point shooting through the middle of the frame. This is an image created, not an image shot. I like that artistic quality very much and you have not overdone the saturation. Nicely in focus it is a refreshing image to study.
