Yes, yes, ... It's cliché to have a Christmas contest around this time, but that doesn't mean it's straightforward to make an impactful photo of it.

Angle, lighting, background and minimizing noise to put emphasis on the tree, are all important factors.

Whether you put up a Christmas tree on your own or you have to go out and find one, make sure to photograph a nice tree in an artistic manner. Both plastic and natural Christmas trees are allowed, but there must be at least some form of decoration on it.

Some rules to keep in mind:

  • The tree has to be completely visible in the frame. So no pictures of decoration or parts of the tree.
  • There can be no people in your photo. Other objects (like presents under the tree) are fine, but the main emphasis must be on the tree.
  • Minimal post-processing (such as blurring the background or removing unwanted distractions) are allowed.
  • Both inside and outside photos are allowed.

Have a look at the following in-depth tutorial on how to photograph your Christmas tree:

Here are some more handy tips to make the most out of your photo.

Good luck!

PS: Try to vote on all entries in the contest. The more votes we get, the more accurate the rankings will be. Also, when you see something on someone's entry that can be improved, let them know. That way, we can learn new skills from each other!

PS 2: Ideas for future contests can be submitted here. The best ideas will be picked and turned into a contest. Make sure to clearly define the rules and objectives of the contest.

The Folk Artisan Tree created by MyMindsEye

For thirty plus years my wife's best friend since high school, has hosted a Christmas Ornament Exchange party. Attendance is always in the neighborhood of 26 people. All of the ornaments on this tree are the collective of these gatherings. Unique, handmade by each attendee year after year. This winter tree showcases those ornaments. Merry Christmas All!

Our Christmas tree created by denlig

This is our Christmas tree, it is a Nordman tree that we bought in a pot in 1999. We replanted it in our garden at the beginning of 2000 and it is still there! In a little over 21 years it has grown more than 10 metres in height and it has of course become impossible to decorate it entirely... unless you have a cherry picker :)
