Ukrainian National Anthem and story of Cross-stich blouse created by Olga.L
Story of Ukrainian Cross-stitch Blouse This is my mother’s blouse that she embroidered circa 1932 while living in Ozerna, Ukraine. When World War 2 broke out my parents fled the shelling, bombs and walked with soldiers to Germany where they spent years in a DP camp (displaced persons) where I was born. When mom left her hometown, she buried her blouse deep in the earth to protect it from harm. Time passed, mom and dad found refuge in Canada (Toronto). When I was a small girl, I remember mom receiving a parcel that contained her blouse. I remember her unwrapping it, holding it to her face, and sobbing. I grew up in the shadow of WW2, a child of refugees and today I watch scenes of war coming through the news reports, and I cry.
