Yea they are mandatory now for like the past 20 years. They use 4 ounce gloves which isn't much. The glove design has always been controversial mainly because of this.

What you see here in this section are highlights which tend to show extreme stuff. Not like people go around and poke each other in the eye - it's illegal.
