The year is almost over, and it was definitely not a boring one! The US president got impeached, Joe Biden became president-elect, the BLM protests, the ongoing threat of COVID-19, the release of a vaccine, all the conspiracy theories around it, ... and the deaths of Chadwick Boseman, Kobe Bryant and Eddy van Halen.

We decided to continue our photoshop contests from Pxleyes here, on the Photoshop community of Grepless!

In this first photoshop contest on this new platform, we are going to design an entry that represents what 2020 meant to you. What stood out? What had an impact on your personal life? Your entry can be a (de)motivational poster, a digital drawing or a collage of events or anything that shows your interpretation of 2020.

In these Photoshop contests, it is important to include all the external sources that you used. You can do so in a reply to your own entry (May need to reload the page). To make those links clickable, simply put the link between brackets.

For the newcomers, simply drop your entry in the large dropzone, or click the dropzone and select your picture from your hard drive.

As these contests develop, new features and rules will be added along the way. It's a work in progress, so all suggestions and critiques are more than welcome.

Contests and other interesting content can be found on the Photoshop community page here: https://grepless.com/c/photoshop

If you prefer photography contests, head over to: https://grepless.com/c/photography

Also, don't forget to vote and comment on other people's work!

Good luck!

WOW this one is really all about 2020. I think it has a professional quality to it in it's dismal and gloomy feel but the togetherness of us humans against this pathogen is shown. Really inspirational thank you for your post.....I just might try to do a chop with the next contest....(something I find impossible).

Rubber-Ray avatarLevel 11
Rubber-Ray replied to Olga.L :

Wow thank you Olga. I had fun making it. I have not done any Photoshopping in some time now, over a year, and it felt good to get back. I've just been doing silly animated gifs. Senseless and silly things like this

Hope to see you in the next contest. I hope they put one up fast. My mind tends to wander away from place to place.

Staaan avatarLevel 19
Staaan replied to Rubber-Ray :

If you put the gif between [ and ] it will load inline, I did it already now.

That thing is terrifying!

Thank you Staaan! Slick edit. Thank you. As you all can hopefully tell, it's supposed to be a Coronavirus monster. :D

Dear Everybody, if you haven't checked out the gif that was created by Rubber Ray please have a look, it is hilarious. Ray, you are so gifted not only to be able to create phenomenal chops but also to think of them in the first place....from where do you get your inspiration. You are also a great and patient teacher and I look forward to your work.

Rubber-Ray avatarLevel 11
Rubber-Ray replied to Olga.L :

Olga, I didn't mean to infer that I rendered that whole scene from scratch. It's a scene from the Movie 'Big Trouble in Little China'. It took about an hour to Photoshop it and then maybe 45 mins to animate and stuff. What I did was I made the Photoshop

from a video frame, took out the background with the guy in it, and saved the Coronavirus spikes as a .png. Then track/align that .png over the video segment, and save it as gif. Hope that makes sense.

Let's try another PS contest after this one!

Have to come up with a theme that is accessible for all levels ðŸĪ”

Any suggestions?

I noticed PS contests, in general, are not as popular anymore, judging by the entries on an oldschool site like photoshopcontest. And Worth1000 has been sold years ago.

Zizounai avatarLevel 15
Zizounai replied to Staaan :

Thanks for asking Staaan! I would suggest "surrealism" or "mixed animals", or a source photo theme?
I agree with you, photoshop contests are not so popular, actually I'm counting on you and this new website to make them popular again ☚I don't participate as much myself in Photoshopcontest, as some of the members were rather nasty and all the fun had gone. I participate much these days in PhotoshopNation, but... it is a bit like that too.

Staaan avatarLevel 19
Staaan replied to Zizounai :

Mixed animals sounds like a good classic to use for the next contest :)

But I need some of your help to make them successful, will send you an e-mail!

Zizounai avatarLevel 15

I don't agree for the game pad. I often play video games which are cryptic, poetic, artistic, they transport me to imaginary words, they make me think and dream.

Staaan avatarLevel 19
Staaan replied to Zizounai :

Don't know if you like this 2D platform game type, but have you tried "Ori and the blind forest"?

It's such a stunning adventure in a gorgeous imaginary world... it's also full of emotion, especially in the opening scene! Very touching

Also on PC and Nintendo switch, playstation I don't know

Zizounai avatarLevel 15
Zizounai replied to Staaan :

I have this one in my computer, it is planned Staaaaan! But my son told me it is rather difficult and I am very bad at platform games, I keep dying and it is rather frustrating. I love less difficult platform games like this one: https://store.steampowered.com/app/221810/The_Cave/
I like point and click adventure games too, Life is strange for example (one and two), The vanishing of Ethan Carter, My brother rabbit, Chuchel, The 3 House of Da Vinci, What remains of Edith Finch, Portal, Syberia, Myst (oh these are old), indie games too, which are often beautiful and full of poetry.
I got Outer wilds for Christmas with Santa, as I've been a good girl 😁

Staaan avatarLevel 19

The cave is also nice...

Ori is rather difficult yes, I just like the world and atmosphere :)

You don't have to vote on this, but the is the picture within the frame. The picture is one of the keys of understanding the theme manifest destiny.

Thank you for putting it up.....I had to look up Manifest Destiny as I had never heard of the term. Life and learn....so much to learn....so little time...ahhhh.

Manifest destiny was a widely held cultural belief in the 19th-century United States that American settlers were destined to expand across North America. Wikipedia

grasshopper1 avatarLevel 11
grasshopper1 replied to Olga.L :

Manifest Destiny: Democracy As Cognitive Dissonance by William Engdahl in reference to George Orwells novel 1984 ".. fictional account of a state which imposes cognitive dissonance on its citizens to control their perception of reality" (sound familiar?)

grasshopper1 avatarLevel 11
grasshopper1 replied to self:

Four frames means 4 years not in order. Just 3 completed and one is not......yet...it's was still 2020 as of the time of completion of the piece.
Anyway....thanks for your comment :)

Do you mean "you can watch the milk but you won't have it" ? War is peace, Milk is hunger?

grasshopper1 avatarLevel 11Gold award
grasshopper1 replied to Zizounai :

Lol...no, it's all based on cognitive dissonance."Cognitive dissonance can make people feel uneasy and uncomfortable, particularly if the disparity between their beliefs and behaviors involves something that is central to their sense of self. For example, behaving in ways (or forced to behave)that are not aligned with your personal values which result in feelings of intense discomfort."
The picture I made, that is in the frame, is a piece inspired by the artist Man Ray. (Re: iron with nails on it)
Now if you applied that to the recent (last 4 years)political scene, you see the man(me) wrestling with the idea of "...government behaving in ways that are not aligned with your personal values that result in intense feelings of great discomfort." 4 frames=4 years,3 a have Dada art in them(3 years completed),
1 is yet to have an picture installed which will be installed jan20,2021.
It all looks like a dream,(nightmare) for the one in the picture. :) A nightmare, that is now starting to fade.
As per:.."design an entry that represents what 2020 meant to you. What stood out? What had an impact on your personal life? "

Zizounai avatarLevel 15
Zizounai replied to grasshopper1 :

Thanks for your reply, it makes all clearer. So you consider that Manifest destiny beliefs are the result of cognitive dissonance? Neat :-) I love Man Ray and the Dadas (and Rubber-Ray ahah). Hope to see you again in the next contests Grasshopper.

Can you explain please?

grasshopper1 avatarLevel 11
grasshopper1 replied to highnon :

I can point you to the first clue that might help you unravel it. But you have to do the work or you will miss the full impact of the piece.(Mentally and emotionally).
Start with Manifest Destiny..and work your way from there. :) What do you find?

Add the title, then look at the pictures, what are the pictures and what do they represent/or how do you feel when you view them ?

Zizounai avatarLevel 15
Zizounai replied to grasshopper1 :

Well on the pictures, I'm not sure but I see a thermos bottle, or maybe a baby bottle with milk inside, at the bottom a cap and perhaps a nipple? I'm not sure as the picture cannot be enlarged much...
I also wonder, if 3 years are over out of 4, only the 2nd one is void?

grasshopper1 avatarLevel 11

The baby bottle, the nipples have pins and nails through them. There are no order to the picture frames, only that one is missing an insert/pic.
