In this photoshop contest, we are going to do the classic 'snow globe', but also allow other weather types.

Your goal is to build a creative scenery or object inside a glass globe. It can be sunny, rainy, misty, snowy, ... or whatever weather type you currently prefer. The dome itself can be any shape you want.

Use your imagination and setup a wonderful dome!

George55 replied to Olga.L :

The background is a rectangular gradient... orange and yellow... draw a line with the cursor from top to bottom, depending the color you use as your foreground, then use a soft brush tool set to a 40% and place color around .... not much.... use same colors as the gradient.... and add a highlight... I did it to the left, following the placement of the sphere and the bright point ... , gave highlights and shadow to the bottom of the sphere and table... The darker lines on the background are done with the Burn tool.... again set to a 30.... to 40 % brushed diagonal....... thanks for your comment...

Zizounai avatarLevel 14
Zizounai replied to Olga.L :

Olga this is what a PSD file looks like when it is saved: https://imgur.com/a/p9xxTIZ. When you save a chop with all its layers, if you don't change it for a .jpg file (or whatever else) it is automatically saved this way.

Olga.L avatarLevel 16
Olga.L replied to Zizounai :

And that saves all my work on all my layers? Why would anyone want to do that....you have the original and the "fixed" version....unless you are doing really detailed work like for chops...(am I right to think that?)

Skyangel avatarLevel 14
Skyangel replied to Olga.L :

People do that because not everyone can do a chop in a few hours or one day. Some people take a few days to finish a work so they save it as layers in case they want to change something on any of the layers at some later time. It is always good idea to save the PSD file till the end of a contest in case we do have mistakes which we have not noticed ourselves. It's a lot easier to fix if we keep the file in layers instead of changing it to a jpeg.

Olga.L avatarLevel 16
Olga.L replied to Skyangel :

Thank you ....I will do this next contest, or at least try.

Zizounai avatarLevel 14
Zizounai replied to Olga.L :

You can just keep it until the contest ends, in case you have something to change, it makes it easier. Nothing to do with detailed chop or not, any chop can be saved and reused this way, even the worse ones πŸ˜‹

I really like the simplicity of this piece. The contrasting blue and orange hues give it a certain impact which draws the eyes to the center of the work and causes viewers to concentrate on the cat and hands. You did a great job of the transparent globe with the distorted reflections of the clouds. The cat in the bubble looks terrified to be under some spell which put it in there in the first place. The hands reaching up to catch and rescue it makes a great story. The only tiny critique I have is about the cutting out of the hands. I still see a bit of a white halo on the back of the right hand which would most likely not be noticeable if there was a white cloud behind it but there is blue sky behind it which causes it to stand out more. Other than that, it is an excellent job. You should be very proud of it.

Your image tells the story of a pet rescue. It is very pleasant to look at and you have followed the rules of a well done transparent globe. The kitten is incredibly cute. The only reproach I can make is that the image is very small, we cannot enlarge it nor see many details in the execution.

Olga.L avatarLevel 16
Olga.L replied to Zizounai :

OH....I didn't know that. How do I enlarge it? Thank you for your time....looking forward to more reproaches 😊

Zizounai avatarLevel 14
Zizounai replied to Olga.L :

No other reproach! I suspected a halo around the hands but was not sure... Skyangel has a better eyesight. If you click on your entry it remains small. Yes your image is small, only 227 k. If you tried to enlarge it, it might become very pixelated, according to the choices you made when you created it. Look at what PS is telling me on its size:
https://imgur.com/a/NZC70Ip
Now take for example the postman snail, which weighs 1,94Mo, which is roughly 8 times more. If you click on the snail entry (Snail mail), you can see many details as it is a large picture.
https://imgur.com/a/Q92hwKY
Other than that, I agree with all the compliments Skyangel wrote. Your chop is gorgeous.

Olga.L avatarLevel 16
Olga.L replied to Zizounai :

Oh dear. I was not paying attention to size....I was so excited to see it being created right before my 'hazy' eyes that I never thought to look. I will pay attention to this in the future. Zizounai, if I enlarge this in PS by increasing image size and canvas size (is that how I would do it)....then would it come out pixellated?

Zizounai avatarLevel 14
Zizounai replied to Olga.L :

You'll have to try this, but... I fear the worst πŸ˜‰ Keep the original safe, just in case!

Olga.L avatarLevel 16
Olga.L replied to Zizounai :

Thank you....just another thing for me to learn on this chop side of grepless.

Skyangel avatarLevel 14Diamond award
Skyangel replied to Olga.L :

Don't ever try enlarging a jpeg a lot because it always comes out pixelated. If you do want to enlarge anything slightly, always change it into a smart object first before you enlarge it and that works a lot better but I have found you still lose a certain amount of clarity because enlarging jpegs makes it necessary to add pixel information which is not there in there first place.
When starting a new work for a composite, I always start with something more than 1500 pixels in width or height. Use high resolution images when using stock so you don't need to enlarge anything. It's always better to reduce the size of things but even when reducing things, make sure you change it to a smart object first.

Olga.L avatarLevel 16
Olga.L replied to Skyangel :

This is great advice, thank you.

Zizounai avatarLevel 14Heart award
Zizounai replied to Olga.L :

I'll add that the resolution is as important as the number of pixels. I usually start with a 3200 x 2400 image, with size I adapt according to my chop, with a resolution of 300 ppi.
I like 300 ppi as it allows to obtain very good cuts.

This piece for me is a lesson to study and learn and wonder how you accomplished such a detailed piece. The statement it makes is making me prickly for I do not agree with the Dali Lama and his shenanigans of trying to keep the Tibetan people in the dark ages of slavery....but that is neither here nor there....sorry for digressing but the image and title did evoke an emotion from me.

Cosmix avatarLevel 8Gold awardMedal Of Honor award
Cosmix replied to Olga.L :

Hi Olga Only the title is a play on the Dali Lama but any reaction is a win for a creative piece. Sometimes I enjoy not searching for meaning particularly in a surreal piece. It makes for a more expansive interpretation.

Many times I've set out with an idea in mind and the process and source search takes it in its own direction. Life is full of tension, not always stressful tension. I often see how my work is a reflection of where I am in life emotionally, professionally and symbolically. Like a subconscious driven dream. We had a massive Dali print in the School assembly Hall fourty years ago and when the pupils were being addressed by the Principle in the hall my mind was exploring the image on the wall of Dali's 'Swans Reflecting Elephants' 1937. in awe of such a beguiling mind and technical skill to create such a masterpiece. I admire Dali on my road to being an Artist.

The Dali Lama like so many human beings put on pedestals as representatives of some higher moral spiritual state have typical human dark sides too. You can find dirt on most of them.

I'm not in the habit of recording my process because I just enjoy doing it. The simplest way I can direct towards my complexity details is layers, layers, layers. One image source in my work might have been processed with four or five layers, dealing with different aspects of that image. I might not like the colour of an arm but the rest is OK so I duplicate the layer and change the colour of the arm and then usually the quickest technique for me is the erase tool on the softest setting to erase the area around the layer that I prefer the layer underneath to show. It is hard to explain in words and many of my techniques aren't the taught process of masking. I find it easier and quicker to duplicate layers and feather between them using the erase tool and transparency settings.

This is the only video that exits of a screen record of creating a Photoshop piece I've done it took 12 hours to load into youtube. https://youtu.be/fOj7B0uuQ-8
