Photoshop Contest: Engines

Photoshop Posted by Staaan

Just like in the previous photoshop contest, you are given a source photo to work with.

Your goal is to manipulate the photo in any way you want and turn it into a work of art. You can use Photoshop or any other digital image manipulation software.

This source photo is one of a plane engine. It was suggested by 'rturnbow' on Pxleyes almost 5 years ago:

source photo
— source photo —

You can find a high resolution version of the photo HERE

Be creative, and let's do some old school photo manipulations!

PS: It's very important to vote on every entry, the more votes we get, the more accurate the rankings will be. Also, when you see something on someone's entry that can be improved, let them know. That way, we can learn new skills from each other!

Good luck

Great job rebuilding the raccoon's far arm. Nice touch with the neon on the building. The smoke shows awareness of details. Hope the raccoon doesn't burn its butt.

Chalty669 avatarLevel 9
Chalty669 replied to Rubber-Ray :

Thanks Rubber-Ray! You really noticed the details, it means a lot. I was worried for this little guys tail, mostly. I tucked it between his legs so it wouldn’t catch fire.

I thought it was a great idea. Making a Rocket Jet pack out of source, and then putting it on a racoon? Who the heck does that? WE DO!! We are Photoshoppers and we make Racoons, with a jet pack, flying over a city. 🤪

I looked at your sources vs your entry and saw the source racoon didn't have a far arm. I appreciated that you had the creativity and knowledge to rebuild the arm. One can't always find the perfect sources to use, and you made a creative solution with what you had.

Great entry! The construction of the robot is brilliant. The left hand could use more contouring, but that’s an extreme nitpick. I do like the altered image without the speaker. Also the subtle touch of the extra light source and rim light really shows your attention to detail. Good job!

Rubber-Ray avatarLevel 11
Rubber-Ray replied to Chalty669 :

Ahh you saw the first version with the speaker. I made it w/o the speaker at first, then added the speaker and it looked great. Came back and the speaker looked not so good so i went back to the original. I know you can relate to that process. And you are absolutely right about the left hand. I was going blind, super tired, and got a bit stressed doing this Chop. Almost didn't enter it at all.

Chalty669 avatarLevel 9
Chalty669 replied to Rubber-Ray :

You’re right, I’ve been there many times. Spending so much time on entries, too many options. I do like this version better, but it wasn’t obviously clear why the speaker shouldn’t be there. I couldn’t really put my finger on it. But it would of been a shame if this wasn’t posted.it’s a great entry either way!

Everything was done with given image. used Liquify... Transform ...Rotation tool to make the plates and the bowl... circular selection over plate... spherize and adjusted to form it... cut it the top and used an oval selection filled with a gradient.... lights and shadows.... Dodge and burn tools.... that is it.... and a little imagination...

A very creative and unique use of the source. The patterns created with the rotation tool make me think of aztec designs for some strange reason. The abstract art piece makes me think of a battle amongst warriors. It's an interesting selection on half price sale in this shop. I think the most practical piece I would buy is the bowl.

George55 avatarLevel 10
George55 replied to Skyangel :

Thanks Angel, it reminds me of an Aztec pattern too, it is for the colors and the twisted blending of shapes.... You’ve made some nice pieces here! My favorite is the bowl.....maybe the back scratcher? Anyways, the only pointer I have for you is maybe the lighting and shadows. Really you have a lot of those things in the right spot, but a little more details like rim lighting or multiple light sources could really throw this over the top. Great job, keep up the good work.

George55 avatarLevel 10
George55 replied to Chalty669 :

Thank you Chalty... yes, by looking at it over and over.... i realize what you mean... The rim of the bowl needs a highlight.... probably a little more on the dark spaces on plate bowl and plate......I was overwelmed by the outcome of the rotations..... and lost those points.... well.... i will learn... thanks for your help...

Nice job finding so many sources, that’s my least favorite thing to do. You did a nice job stitching your sources together, you just need more work on lighting shading and focus. Your background is in focus more than some of your sources in front of it. Simply by adding a blur to the background you could help the depth of field. Additionally adding a slight grain over everything will pull it together. Keep up the good work.

I like that you used the original sky background and made the engines pointy. The back engine still has the original shape behind the point which I think might distract from your final image. The body language of your creature is spot on. I think some slight shading between the structure and the sand might help as well.

I love your defeated warrior and the alien buildings in the sand. It tells a great story. Suggestions for improvement are maybe add some more loose sand around the base of the buildings. It just looks to "clean" where the buildings meet the sand. There should be some sand on the buildings themselves as well due to wind etc. If your grit brushes are too "gritty" there are plenty of fine sand brushes for free at Brusheezy. Search for sand and dust brushes.

Looks like you were playing around with some blend modes. The flowers could benefit from either the distort, warp or liquify tool to match the engine shape. Also the items in the sky look like they are set to maybe screen. To get rid of the box around it you could adjust the black point in levels until the box is no longer visible.

Perfect advice from Chalty669. As a general rule "Screen Mode", or any other blend mode in that section, will only show lighter colors "North" of 50% Grey. "Multiply Mode" or any other blend mode in that section, will only show darker colors "South" of 50% Grey. This image set to "Screen" would only show the white dot, and the opposite for "Multiply" https://cdn.wallpapersafari.com/7/84/b30jxB.jpg. Also, get to know "Blend-If".
