In this contest, we are going to turn real people into cartoons!

Take any photo of a person, and turn him into a cartoon character. The character can resemble an existing cartoon, or you can invent an entirely new cartoon character. A cartoon character could be from Disney, Pixar, any cartoon TV show, anime, comic books, or even a caricature ...

If you need a source for your character, have a look at the recent 'member portraits' photo contest: here. Just make sure to ask for permission first. You can do so by commenting on the person's entry. If you get the green light, let your imagination run wild!

It is also allowed to use a photo of yourself, a family member or any celebrity. Using tools that automate the process of cartoonifying are not allowed. It is required in this contest to explain how you created your cartoon, what application you used and what sources you used (In the description of your entry). Otherwise, the entry may get disqualified.

Based on suggestion by Skyangel

PS: If you want to see what the inverse of this contest would mean, have a look at these mildly disturbing creations from Marvelous Mikee on Instagram: @marvelous_mikee or on his Artstation page.

Cosmix, OMG you are so in luck!!! A lot of the times I use "WinX HD Video Converter Deluxe" to compress video. Been using it for years. It's so easy to use and the videos look great. Just drag and drop your video file into it and it will come up with some presets like 720P, 1080P, 4K, etc. You can then pick Low Quality, Medium Quality, or High Quality. Then press RUN. Thats it!! They are giving it away for Mac but you only have 3 more days to download it, install it, and use the registration key they give you. Click the green button that says "FREE DOWNLOAD" under "Giveaway License". It will be a zip file and it has the registration key in a text file.

I also have the giveaway version and it has like pop up when you open it and when you are done with a video it takes you to their website. Hey, it's free so deal with it huh? ๐Ÿ˜€

Really good work. Couple suggestions now that we can edit our images. Get rid of the drop shadow on the snowflake. Also get rid of the darkness that surrounds her arms, hands, and some of her fingers. It looks like it may have been added by a filter.

Skyangel avatarLevel 15
Skyangel replied to Rubber-Ray :

Thank you very much for the suggestions R-R. I did what you said and it does look better.

Rubber-Ray avatarLevel 11
Rubber-Ray replied to Skyangel :

It does look better!! WOW that made a huge difference. Man she really stands out now. Just another small suggestion that may help. The snowflake now gets a bit lost in the clouds. Both are white. I'm not exactly sure how to handle it but maybe you could either darken the clouds some behind it, move the clouds around to a more blue area, or even clone or copy/paste/mask another section of blue sky behind it. Maybe not those exact suggestions but something along those lines to seperate the snowflake from the BG. Heck maybe even darkening or adding contrast to the snowflake may work and would be super easy. You are goign to have to use trial and error which is my favorite technique!! ๐Ÿคช

Skyangel avatarLevel 15
Skyangel replied to Rubber-Ray :

Thanks R-R but the snowflake was deliberately made with a glassy transparent look because it is supposed to be opaque ice so if I make it darker behind it, or take away the clouds, it looks like a shadow again and I lose the transparent effect. So I will leave it as it is now. I gave it a slight cyan outer glow. That will have to do. Thank you for your help and great tips and suggestions. Keep them coming. I appreciate them.

Colouring .. turned image BnW. added a photo filter of sepia . various items had Brightness and contrast clipped to them to make them fit the image better . The eyes also had a clip of brightness and contrast added at the end to bring back a little more life after having all the painting added. The eyes were : liquified to the limits and beyond . Author. Artificial Intelligence for enhancing and enlarging images is changing rapidly. Of course Photoshop has it's new "Super Resolution" in Camera RAW that works "OK" from what I have seen (I don't have it yet). However there are some web based sites that can do a better job such as https://imglarger.com/ . Believe it or not Cell-Phone/Tablet Apps are pretty darned good for this too and are perhaps superior to PS. I just used "Remini", which is a cell-phone/tablet app, as well as Imglarger.com to bring the resolution of the image you provided from 800X532 to 1600X1062. Remini did a better job at first glace, but Imglarger.com looks a little more natural. Remini is very aggressive and at times can change things. As far as I can tell, Remini has sample images on their server and can use their "body/skin/hair parts" to replace the ones on the Photo. Remini "replaced" her eyelashes, some of the hair, a little bit of her upper lip, and if you look around you can see more. This isn't necessarily a bad thing as you yourself said you had rebuild the girl's skin. Check out my comparison here. I used PS's regular resize. https://imgur.com/a/YOFYOJs

Zizounai avatarLevel 15
Zizounai replied to Rubber-Ray :

Thanks for your comment. I don't have a cell phone so I couldn't tell. The photos are so small on cell phones that they always look good. The difference shows when you watch them on a large computer screen. The imgur photos you've uploaded are too small as well for me to make a difference, even on a computer screen!!! I don't bother spending hours on PS for I love it. It makes me sad to hear that the same job could be done in a snap with an app... and I don't really believe it. It might look similar but it isn't. The soul is absent.

Rubber-Ray avatarLevel 11
Rubber-Ray replied to Zizounai :

If you were to take those images into PS, as one document as separate layers, you will see that Remini is superior. I'm viewing them on a 32" Professional Grade 4K monitor. But I do understand your point if view.

Zizounai avatarLevel 15
Zizounai replied to Rubber-Ray :

I'll try this. But I can't help thinking that creative plugins are more useful than apps when it comes to chopping. Look at this one https://stackoverflow.blog/2021/03/31/the-key-copy-paste/

Rubber-Ray avatarLevel 11
Rubber-Ray

Here's a funny story. On another site this user wanted a blurry pic of his deceased father enhanced and resized larger. So me (a Photoshopper) and a bunch of pro Photographers gave it a go. At first we were trying this, trying that... we were getting really technical and using all kinds of tricks to make his dad look better. We did an OK job, a good job, but not great. Fast forward 6 months later and Remini came out. I did "one click" on this little tablet app and let me tell you it blew away everything we had done earlier. ๐Ÿคช

Zizounai avatarLevel 15
Zizounai replied to Rubber-Ray :

Ooooh what other site is it? I would be happy to volunteer helping people to recover old photos... another lockdown where I live, you see... I still want to beat the apps.

Rubber-Ray avatarLevel 11
Rubber-Ray replied to Zizounai :

It's not a Photoshop site. It's a Mixed Martial Arts site/forum. I just know a lot of people there and they know that I do Photoshop so I help them out. The thing is that a lot of this technology that comes out on websites and apps, eventually makes it to Photoshop. http://www.remove.bg was just blowing away PS's "Select Subject". Eventually PS caught up. PS tried to catch up with their "Super Resolution" but the apps and websites are still better. Right now PS is trying to catch up with their "Neural Filters" but other places are better for some of them. Things are changing fast.

Hi Author. I like your creation.. If i may give a tip : if you look closely at your image there are a few little black lines on the shirt and a bit of "left overs" around the hair , just in front of the face..

To clean up your image there are two options : 1: add a layer mask and while painting on the layer mask touch up a little with black. it will remove them cleanly and can be redone without destroying your works. 2: take an eraser to those marks but be careful once removed , what ever mistake you make can not be brought back. I would personally use the masking and a soft brush set at 100 % opacity .

This is a lovely creation , it is the attention to those little left over bits that will bring your works into a more polished finish.

I have a problem. Y'see I'm new to all this manipulation stuff and when I get something almost right I'm overjoyed with that feeling of "WOW I DID IT I DID IT" then I overlook the little details because I'm so wound up on euphoria. Another teacher (on this site) once told me to be careful with the smallest details, thanks to her advice the photo got selected to a rather prestigious photo exhibition. You would think I learned my lesson....hurumph. Thank you for your advice, I appreciate it and next contest I will pay more attention to the little things. Thanks again.

Cartoon Myself created by Olga.L

I used the Cartoonize yourself tutorial but got stuck at the 6-minute mark. Then I used the distort filter to distort myself.

What exactly about the 6 minute mark caused you to get stuck? If you let me know, maybe I can help? Either way, you obviously achieved the goal of turning yourself into a cartoon. Well done.

Olga.L avatarLevel 17
Olga.L replied to Skyangel :

In the tutorial he says to make a smart object which I can do, then he says to make a copy and when I do that then the layer gets "rasterdized" whatever that means and the smart object is no more, it becomes a layer...but I ignored the fact that it "rasterdiced" and just continued to work on it.

Skyangel avatarLevel 15Hug awardDiamond award
Skyangel replied to Olga.L :

It means it turns it into a plain layer which is not a smart object. Take a look at this video.

It will explain the difference to you. You must have accidentally clicked rasterize because smart objects don't automatically rasterize when you duplicate them. If it happens again you can simply convert the layer back to a smart object before you work on it.

Olga.L avatarLevel 17
Olga.L replied to Skyangel :

I'm now having more problems as the liquefy won't recognize the face whether it is raterized or just plain....arrrggghhh.

Skyangel avatarLevel 15
Skyangel replied to Olga.L :

When that happens, its generally because you accidentally used the selection tool and something is selected. Make sure you click "deselect" before you go into liquify. It has happened to me before too. If the tiniest spot is selected you might not even realize it because it might be only a few pixels.

Author... everything you are saying sounds EXACTLY like what has happened with me throughout the years... and still does. You are not alone Author!!

Cosmix avatarLevel 9
Cosmix replied to Skyangel :

So true Skyangel. Another one that took me ages to figure out was the cursor indicating the brush or eraser size disappearing. Then found out it's if you accidentally have the caps lock on, on the keyboard.

Congrats on your creation. Reading the posts it sounds like it was a challenge. I don't know what i like more the image you have created or the fact you did not give up , finished it and posted. You have a wonderful outcome. I hope that you continue to learn and post more wonderful creations. ( it does get easier until you tackle more challenging tasks, then the learning starts all over again . But oh so worth it in the long run .. keep up the wonderful work :D ) .

The photoshop chop side of grepless is very challenging for Luddites of all ages, however, every time I struggle with something I learn something new. It is fun. The best part about this humble little photo site is that there are some great teachers here who are willing to go that extra kilometer to help a fellow wannabe artist along. Thank you for your time. So much to learn, so little time.

Did she have face paint on or did you paint the dots and tears on her face in photoshop?
I would clone out the distracting lines on the left side of the background.

I'd painted her face for a school thing, thought it would put an interesting twist. Its a doir in the background, vaild point.

Animal crossing created by Zizounai

Externals: https://imgur.com/a/OuTxFrq The girl and TV photos are my photos. Used Photoshop, cut and paste, mainly camera raw filter various settings (detail, noise reduction, vibranceโ€ฆ) Added the glasses and the bird, some shadows. Cut off the girlโ€™s head. Then of course pasted it back and made it larger. Put the glasses on. Moved the direction of the eyes so she watches the bird.
