People have been mixing species via Photoshop since its early existence! It's one of those classic Photoshop contests from the mid-2000s.

We've had many such contests on Pxleyes, here is an example from 3 years ago: Animal mashup 2018

Which was won by user 'skyangel', with the following entry:

Winner of the animal mash-up PS contest on Pxleyes: skyangel
— Winner of the animal mash-up PS contest on Pxleyes: skyangel —

Let's keep this almost cliche type of photoshopping alive! Both software and hardware have evolved drastically over the years, and the possibilities of mixing species, are endless.

Your goal is to mix two or more species of animal into 1. This is your chance to play God and craft your own ultimate animal! What are its strengths? Weaknesses? How does it survive? Where does it live? Write a little story around your creation if you wish. At a minimum, think of a great name for your species. It's your creation, you can name it!

List your sources in a reply to your entry. You can make links clickable by placing them within square brackets.

Don't forget to vote and give feedback to other entries, so we can support each other. Let the most creative new animal win!

Good luck!

Hybrid is made from a whale, iguana, and a manta ray. Click image to see hi-res. It looks a lot better.

Skyangel replied to Rubber-Ray :

May I name it a Whaliganaray? It is obviously a recent find of an unknown prehistoric creature that has the ability to float through clouds in spite of its huge size. The hunter is obviously prepared to protect himself in case of any emergency but I hope he makes sure he has all the correct scientific data needed to record such a historical find. I hope the creature is not a man eater? Great chop. !

Hi SA!! Is there anyway to personal message on this site? I wanna talk to you. It was not my intention to make the creature ferocious but he can be w/e you like. I did put a shark mouth on him at one point to make him look mean but I liked the peaceful look. Like he is just cruising. Where is he going? I don't know. The guy... I reckon he is just watching. He is part of the kingdom of humans that live in the realm of the creature. Boy I am terrible at describing things haha. I should probably just shut up and let people interpret it on their own.

Papchap replied to Rubber-Ray :

wow I had no idea how much work you spent on it!! crazy, 2 - 3 days for the idea! What was the original idea tho? Is the picture just very ascetic or was there a story behind it?

Rubber-Ray avatarLevel 11
Rubber-Ray replied to Papchap :

It was started off being a cow-frog but that didn't turn out well. Then it was going to be a manta-ray with a skeletal body and maybe an eel tail in an under water scene. I tried that, used the iguana tail and its spikes instead of the eel tail, but the "scene" looked ordinary. Then I wanted a lookout with a modern looking mother and child who were looking at it in the clouds. It ended up as a fantasy kingdom with the spear guy. As for a story well I reckon it is just an ancient kingdom with that creature cruising along. :D

The beauty of this side of Grepless is that I find myself totally absorbed not only by the images but am dazzled by the imagination shown by the artists, their savviness of working photoshop chops, their sense of humour. This crabby Reptifowline is so realistic that we begin to believe that it does inhabit the beaches in and around Cairns and other areas of Australia. The personality of crabbiness/craziness comes through yet a part of us are endeared by the web feet, the visual bluster, the realistic background all blending together to cause the viewer to pause and study this image from all angles. It is beautifully done Skyangel, your work ROCKS.

A Crabby Reptifowline. They are a rare species found on beaches when the tide is coming in around sunset. Zizounai avatarLevel 14
Zizounai replied to Skyangel :

What a strange creature! difficult to imagine its size, how big would a human be near it? Looks grumpy, if it is really large I'd not feel safe if I saw one. Do they live in Australia?

Skyangel avatarLevel 14
Skyangel replied to Zizounai :

They come in various sizes but I have never come across one larger than a person. Mostly they are about the size of a large duck. Maybe because they have duck genes. You can tell by the webbed feet. They are not known to be native to any country because they are so rare but they have been spotted on a few of the uninhabited islands on Earth, mainly by explorers who have made it their profession to find unusual creatures. The average person would most likely never see one unless they went on a special trip with a professional explorer. ;-)

This animal obviously did not want to hear whatever you were saying to it. Therefore it must be very independent and maybe even untrainable if it won't to listen to commands? Can it talk back at all or does it simply ignore any attempts at communication? Is it called a Dogape or an Apedoggy or maybe it has another unusual name?

Is this creature the offspring of a canine and Homosapien? I know many people love dogs but....???? I better not go into the kind of relationships we should refrain from in case I offend some lovers. ( All in good humor.) :-) Anyway, does this unusual but friendly-looking Homocanine have a name? Huclaudiky ? Weilyman? What language does it speak? I am always interested in how to communicate with canines but it would be even more interesting if this creature can speak both canine and human since it would easily be able to interpret between its parent species. https://www.theawl.com/2011/11/how-to-talk-to-your-dog/

They are very cute little creatures. Do they make any noises or are they the silent type? Are these the culprits that have been eating the dandelions on my lawn before they go to seed?

Zizounai avatarLevel 14
Zizounai replied to Skyangel :

They make tiny little noises, if you can imagine a micro-zebra's voice you got the picture. Or the song. About your dandelions it was me!!! and I made a kind of jam we call Cramaillotte here. Scrumptious, your dandelions are first quality.
Here is the recipe: https://www.leparfait.com/recipe/cramaillotte-or-dandelion-honey_736#page/1

Skyangel avatarLevel 14
Skyangel replied to Zizounai :

Micro Zebra songs sound great in my imagination. Hahaha. As for the dandelion jam, that's the first time I have ever heard of it and you are actually serious! Well, you taught me something new. I don't think I will make it myself though, but the recipe does look interesting. Does it taste like honey or like marmalade with all that citrus in the recipe? I am not much of a jam connoisseur, except for raspberry jam.

Zizounai avatarLevel 14
Zizounai replied to Skyangel :

Cramaillote is actually something unique. It doesn't taste like honey, it just looks a bit like it. There is not so much citrus in it when you look at the proportions. It is more bitter than sour, but the sugar compensates it... sweetly. It takes a long time to prepare: first a long walk in the sun to pick up all the flowers, and then plucking all their little petals, trying to keep only the yellow parts. An ideal occupation in times of lockdown 😊

This creature looks like it is wondering what you are doing in its territory taking photos of it. Were you in a diving cage at the time so that no unusual creatures could harm you or were you just in the open ocean with your camera? Is the creature dangerous to humans? Is it a backpacking fisherell or a squish? What do you call this unusual creature? Where it is heading with the back pack? Is it going on a holiday or does it just store food in there? What does it eat and what kind of noise does it make?

Papchap avatarLevel 9Gold award
Papchap replied to Skyangel :

This is a marmot. But they have been saddened with unbearable grief, because their child died in a terrible mining accident. They cried so much their body could only compensate by becoming a fish, to deal with the salty tearwater.
This is why the marmot has a fish's head. And people say, they must be looking for their deceased child. But some people say, they must be looking for a new habitat.
Its hard being a marmot with a fish's head.

Here is a photograph of what they and their child looked like when it was still alive:

Thanks Papchap. I like your heart wrenching but creative little story. ;-) Since it is no longer a marmot and is not a squish or fisherell. It must be a marfish or a fishmot? It just amazes me how devastating emotions and mining accidents result in the evolution of new species. ;-)

Dino Rino in monochrome no less. What a great idea as we focus on the fact that he looks like he has been domesticated wearing shoes and loved by the owner, housed in a barn of sorts. Yet he on occasion loves to roar and feel the memory of a prehistoric forest coursing through his veins. I also like the fact that all around you put a bit of a vignette to darken and the lighter interior brings our eyes directly to this sort of fierce, but not too fierce, fella who looks like he is ready to walk the earth! Love it.

The Dino Rino looks like he is all dressed for some kind of sport. I would suspect a running race? Maybe I have got the story all wrong? If I have, you will need to enlighten me to the reason he is wearing shoes? Did he just want to see what it was like to walk in the shoes of a human? ;-) It could inspire all kinds of wonderful stories.

It seems flygoos are very tiny and like to hover around flowers. Was it trying to hide and you managed to sneak around to the side it was hiding on to take its photo? They must hide well since I have never seen one in real life but they must really exist since here in Australia they have an airline with a flying kangaroo logo on its tail. ;-)

Derpdeer is rather a handsome fellow and he has the same look as I do when I overeat (especially during lockdown). Those blue antennae are an early warning system that alert him to more luscious tidbits he can find scattered on the terrain. I hope he is a vegetarian. I like the way he comes out at us in full focus against a soft background. Lovely.

Hi there. It's good to see your work again. Are those blue antennas for sensing any alien predators or for something else? I suspect his hearing and sight would be excellent. He can obviously see something yummy to eat in the distance since he is licking his chops in anticipation of a great meal. Hopefully, he is not going to eat one of the creatures displayed on this site? ;-)

Hi Olga, You did a very good job for your first entry. I agree it would have got more votes if it had come in earlier. This is the first time I have seen it so I did not get a chance to vote. You took on one of the hardest challenges for a newbie when you chose to cut out a lions mane. Anyway, since you specifically asked for my critique, here it is... When you cut anything that has hair, It is best not to soften the edges too much when you are intending to paste it onto a very contrasting background. The mane blends well where it meets the hair of the cow but doesn't look so great where it meets the sky. The cutting and feathering is far too obvious. Here is a youtube tutorial about cutting out hair. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cSXKTXQI3HI You also need to check for anything that needs cloning out like the stick in the lion's mane near the top left horn. There is also a small mark in the sky near the same horn which needs cleaning up. I think the color of the lion's head also needs to be toned down in the yellows a bit to match the cows hair a bit better. It looks warmer than the body. I also would have cloned out that orange spot in the fur near the bend of the right horn. Matching color tones is important when making composites. You don't want one part of the composite looking warmer or cooler than another part. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GNmCWEYmu_M Other than those few things, I can't see anything else that could be improved. I admire your efforts. Please don't let my critique make you hesitant to try again. You did ask for it, after all. I look forward to seeing more from you. They say practice makes perfect. ⭐⭐
