A picture contains a thousand words! That's plenty of words to visualize a song! You guessed it, we are going to take pictures that represent a song.

Tell us, what is your favorite song or lyric and how would did you capture it in one photo? The photo you take does not necessarily have to be about the title of the song. If you have a deep emotional attachment to a verse within the song, your photo can be about that as well.

Winner of the song lyrics contest on Pxleyes

Use the title of your entry to post the title of the song. Use the description to post the full lyrics. If you can find it on Youtube, post a comment below your entry with the music video of the song. (You can do so by putting the youtube link between square brackets).

Explain why this song is important to you. If the picture is an abstract representation, also explain its meaning.

If you need inspiration, have a look at this contest we had on Pxleyes 12 years ago. We used a similar theme but people had to guess the song.

Good luck!

Africa created by Vibeke

AFRICA I hear the drums echoing tonight But she hears only whispers of some quiet conversation She's coming in, 12:30 flight The moonlit wings reflect the stars that guide me towards salvation I stopped an old man along the way Hoping to find some old forgotten words or ancient melodies He turned to me as if to say, "Hurry boy, it's waiting there for you" It's gonna take a lot to drag me away from you There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do I bless the rains down in Africa Gonna take some time to do the things we never had (ooh, ooh) The wild dogs cry out in the night As they grow restless, longing for some solitary company I know that I must do what's right As sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti I seek to cure what's deep… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FTQbiNvZqaY

To me, the photo conveys the harshness of the country. The dead tree and dry grass imply the end of an era but the clouds in the sky seem to bring a promise of new beginnings as the creatures hope for the refreshing water of life to rain down on them. It's excellent work.

I really like this family photo of the mother with her children. You chose a great song to convey the responsibility of mothers and how much input they have on their families. The mother in this photo is obviously happy and enjoying what she does in spite of the weight and burden of her offspring which she is carrying. The only critique I have is about the background. It looks to me like you changed the original background and enlarged whatever background you added to it because it looks pixelized and stretched out. Maybe just blur the background and add a different texture to it? However, that is simply all about personal preference and ultimately depends what you as the artist like best and what look you want to achieve.

Olga.L avatarLevel 17
Olga.L replied to Skyangel :

Thank you, but I am one step ahead of you....I did blur that background! I gave her a copy of this image and the entire village came out to see what it was I gave her....photography is a wonderful way to break through cultures and bring us closer together. Thank you again.

You picked a great song to go with your photo. They "marry" well.
I absolutely LOVE the expression on the face of the groom. Whatever "sweet nothings" the bride is whispering in his ear, leaves much to the imagination of the viewer. One thing I do notice though is that background on the phone camera is different to the background on your photo which causes me to believe you changed the background for some reason. I actually like the nature background on the phone camera better than the plain black tarp looking background but that is a matter of personal taste.

Olga.L avatarLevel 17
Olga.L replied to Skyangel :

WOW I had not noticed that but no I did not change the background. The phone camera was shooting upwards and that black tarp stopped at my margin and behind it was a forest/trees. That tarp was also a bit see through. I'm impressed that you saw that and I had not noticed it at all. Thank you for your comments, which I appreciate very much.

Skyangel avatarLevel 15
Skyangel replied to Olga.L :

In that case, I will presume the background on the phone is a reflection of the background behind the photographer since the phone shot also has another reflection covering the bride. I love your bride and groom shot but if it was my photo I would have cropped the phone out of the scene because its distracting to me personally. I think I also would have darkened the already black background and made it totally black. It would make a great square portrait.

Olga.L avatarLevel 17
Olga.L replied to Skyangel :

Yes, I too thought of that portrait format....maybe for a portrait contest. I did leave that iphone in the image to further the story along of a gathering, a joyous moment captured by not only my camera but another camera!

What a great song, the Anthem for our times (2020). Your post suits the title perfectly and is well done with the blue hues making us feel cold, lost, going nowhere...although today for some strange reason the sun is shining and I feel great....living this wonderful gift called life! oooops, sorry I'm getting philosophical. Although I'm never sure about borders and our photography club doesn't allow them for photo exhibitions I do like yours and think it supports the photo (take that photo club). I would not have minded a bit more space up top but that is strictly a subjective opinion. Only a photographer would stop to take this photograph. Love it!

I like the simplicity, clarity and texture of this photo. You put in a lot of effort to translate a song for us but it is also delightful to listen to the French version and watch the singer. I am sure there must be some metaphoric meaning about the world being a cactus which might come across better in French than it ever would in English. Often a lot of meaning is lost when translating metaphors from one language to another but the singer seems to have had a lot of fun with the song. I am wondering why anyone would put cactus in their pants and bed to defend themselves against the "pricks" on the outside? It has a lot of humor to it but in my mind it also conjures up images of self harm for some strange reason.
Here is my contribution to the "prick" jokes....

So you translated this song for us and that was a lot of work ouch ouch ouch. It is hilarious and when I read that "in my pants, I put cactus" I broke out laughing. Here is a joke for you because your song reminded me :

What is the difference between a Porsche and a cactus?

With a cactus, the pricks are on the outside.

With a Porsche the pricks are on the inside!

aha ha ha ha ha ha ha🤣 😂😝

It is morning here in Vietnam and your post was the first one that caught my eye....I opened it, and listened to the song and can you believe it....I'M STILL GRINNING FROM EAR TO EAR. How fortunate you are to have this magical wee "beastie" in your neighborhood, it is no bloody wonder Aussies are such happy people. From a photographic standpoint, your image is sublime with great detail on the bird and depth of field is soft putting all attention on the bird. Colours are realistic, natural, nothing is overcooked. Inclusion of the sign to remind us of "recreation zone" adds for it reinforces that life is just a joyful journey and it can be fun. The photo captures the song beautifully. It has a sad vibe about it though with a lonely man standing at an empty station watching the train leave, not knowing when his loved one will return.
I really like the photo but I am wondering if the section on the right adds anything to it or if it might look better cropped back to the brick pilon into a square format? It's just because the ghosted person on the right is a bit distracting when one really studies the photo, though it is quite unnoticeable at first glance. I would also try giving the blue parts of the moving train a motion blur because I can see reddish and cyan pixels amongst the blue color. A motion blur would take those away. However, regardless of my opinions about changes, the photo is still above average. Excellent work.

Olga.L avatarLevel 17
Olga.L replied to Skyangel :

I wrestled with this crop even before I put this up but in the end decided that the ghostly figures on the move are juxtaposed and give more meaning to the fellow standing, (the world is passing him by but he waits) as you often say, it is a personal choice. I do not understand about the motion blur technique you speak of....do you mean take my selective tool and just pick out the blue stripes then add a motion blur ? If that is what you mean I will try it but let me know if that is what you mean.
Thank you for your in-depth study of this image....appreciated.

Skyangel avatarLevel 15
Skyangel replied to Olga.L :

Yes that's basically what I mean.
Here is a tutorial on creating the blur using the zoom effect found on the radial blur tool.

You need to make sure the blur angle matches the angle of motion which is already in the scene though. That is a bit fiddly sometimes.

Olga.L avatarLevel 17
Olga.L replied to Skyangel :

This is a great tutorial, thank you Skyangel. I do not think all that fiddling and fuddling on my photo would improve it and would make it appear staged which it wasn't.

Waiting for a Brighter Day by Tyler Jones created by Olga.L

The poor man definitely looks like he is down on his luck. He looks most depressed. The photo conveys his feeling of depression perfectly. I feel sorry for him. The plain cream background gives it a "dreamy" feeling as if he is lost in limbo and has no defined past or future and no way of escaping his "nightmare". A very emotionally provocative entry.

Wonderful wonderful Copenhagen. created by Vibeke

To wonderful, wonderful Copenhagen Salty old queen of the sea Once I sailed away But I'm home today Singing Copenhagen, wonderful, wonderful Copenhagen for me I sailed up the Skagerrak And sailed down the Kattegat Through the harbour and up to the quay And there she stands waiting for me With a welcome so warm and so gay Wonderful, wonderful Copenhagen Wonderful, wonderful Copenhagen Copenhagen is one of my favourite cities. The song is from the 1952 film 'Hans Christian Andersen' sung by Danny Kaye. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t1YMv_qx5Cw

Oh, what a great happy song that is. I found myself swaying with 'gayness'. It suits your post because the post is happy with exuberance of colours and exuberance of life with tourists taking photos of each other, biking, and just really enjoying the scene. Your lens caught it well, nice and sharp and it really shows us "wonderful wonderful Copenhagen!....salty queen of the sea!" Technical elements well done

Raining on the Rock. created by Skyangel

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZNOLCeGZH0 Pastel red to burgundy and spinifex to gold We've just come out of the mulga where the plains forever roll And Albert Namatjira has painted all the scenes And a shower has changed the lustre of his land And it's raining on the rock, in a beautiful country And I'm proud to travel this big land, like an Aborigine And it's raining on the rock, what an almighty sight to see And I'm wishing on a postcard, that you were here with me Everlasting daisies and the beautiful desert rose Where does their beauty come from, heaven knows I could ask the wedgetail, but he's away too high I wonder if he understands, it's wonderful to fly And it's raining on the rock, in a beautiful country And I'm proud to travel this big land, like an Aborigine And it's raining on the…

What a fabulous ballad that is and I was studying your photo as I listened and your photo came alive. You live in a beautiful country, a place I visited once where my husband ran the Sydney Marathon. We wanted to return alas.....The best part of your country is that is full of beautiful people, helpful, fun and kind....now to your photo. It looks very much like a painting for the rock is in softness but the colours feel very real. How serendipitous....you lucky photographer....you have not one but two rainbows. Thank you for your post and making me hunger to travel there......someday.

What a sad song, gosh and this pet has obviously left you with his paw prints on your heart. I really like the simplicity of this image, that minimalistic feel. The tones are well done and you have good detail in the black fur. Just a tip for you ...when you are in camera RAW bring down the highlight lever to get more detail in that wave and if it becomes to dull you can crank up the exposure lever and still maintain detai. Goodbye Coal, you are loved....still.

WOW London Symphony Orchestra no less.....I'm listening as I'm writing and studying your post. Where are all the lonely people....? The graves? The gravestones? Were they lonely once but now they are just dead? Do we live in a dream-like Eleanor? This is well-taken image, nicely exposed, level and makes us ponder life and death. I have had two acquaintances die from COVID and one friend.

Chose this version of E.R. because everybody knows the original and thought the orchestral version was appropriate for the image. As you have noticed, it allows the viewer to ponder the words in your mind as an extension of the image.
Stay safe, Be well. Cheers!

I like the composition of this piece with people walking by, slightly blurred but the main subject sharp as a pin and looking directly at us (you). Good idea to change to monochrome for we would have gotten lost in the colour but here we just get punched in the gut by this post. Square format, hmmm, I would not have minded to see that fellow's head in the upper L hand corner (viewer's perspective). The song marries perfectly with the scene.

Wayne-Cheah avatarLevel 12
Wayne-Cheah replied to Olga.L :

Thanks.

It's cropped to discard all distracting elements, (including some body parts of the two walkers)

I wanted only three faces, (which tell the whole story), to concentrate sharpy the viewer's attention.

A counter-point to the homeless guy are the facial expressions of the two walkers, who appeared to have looming personal problems of their own. Ironically, in contrast, the homeless guy, though destitute, seemed almost in resigned contentment, having accepted his present life's circumstances.

Skyangel avatarLevel 15
Skyangel replied to Wayne-Cheah :

I don't see resigned contentment in the homeless persons face at all. I see a man directly giving the photographer a "dirty look" for taking his photo. The other two seem to have angry looks about them and seem to want to ignore everything around them. I find it interesting to see the subject clothed in a winter outfit while the two people passing in front of him are dressed for summer.

Wayne-Cheah avatarLevel 12
Wayne-Cheah replied to Skyangel :

Yes, your interpretation is perfectly tenable.

As for the winter clothings, being homeless, I suppose he had to bring all his possessions with him wherever he goes. So, rather than letting it laying on the ground the whole of summer, he just wears it I suppose.

Olga.L avatarLevel 17
Olga.L replied to Wayne-Cheah :

Yes, that is true there is a look of acceptance by the homeless fellow. I also found it interesting that his hand is not out, he is not begging. Where was this shot?

Wayne-Cheah replied to Olga.L :

Sorry, I wouldn't want to disclose the location so as not to particularize the national identity of the people in the photo. It is meant to depict a sad universal aspect of the human condition. Hope you understand.

Well done. Certainly has the classic film noir feel. B/W may have better conveyed the mood but, a well seen subject none the less.

Wayne-Cheah avatarLevel 12
Wayne-Cheah replied to MyMindsEye :

Thanks @MyMindsEye. I have samples of it in B&W, but it does not convey as well the aged rustic texture of the right-side wall which gives the image the "classic" look I was after. And also the light bulb at the entrance is tungsten which gives it the soft, orangish glow that only color could convey which adds to the atmospheric small-town feel.

Someone went to a lot of trouble to decorate a tree. It is artistic and the squirrel is really cute although slightly blurry. The photo is also overexposed. If you can retake the photo, I suggest you use a faster shutter speed or smaller aperture.

grasshopper1 avatarLevel 11
grasshopper1 replied to Skyangel :

Thank you for the reply. Yes I do know all of what's wrong with the pic, but I put it in anyway. To me it's all about the theme as a whole and not my photog skills. Also I had no time to change set up on my camera, the squirrel came and went in seconds,so I had to shoot with what I had. That tree is like that 24-7,we just change the scarf every other month. The kids and neighbors in the hood love it. :)
