So many points to love about this well taken, well-composed, and thought through image. On a technical level the tonal ranges rock from rich blacks through a multitude of grays to pure white thus making it a stand out. Taking the colour out pulls us closer to the subject and you waited for "the photograph to be born" and caught his eyes looking into 'ours'. There is a story here of his life with the sewing machine in the corner, the huddled feeling of a cramped space and yet so seemingly at peace with a meditative process of sewing and sitting in lotus pose. The image is so sharp you could cut yourself on it and the details in shadows are perfect, including the pits in the wall behind him. Simply a brilliant photograph. I hope you showed this to him after you took it....it lovely and we can learn a lot from it through study. Thank you...two thumbs up.

Thanks for your detailed appreciation of the image. I did indeed show him the result. He was a friendly chap with such a happy disposition. His name is Anand. I sat and chatted with him and had tea with him while my wife was scouring the shops.

Thank you so much. I am so chuffed that others liked this image. I, of course, have personal memories which enhance the image when I see it. So when others like the shot without that personal connection it is doubly satisfying.
