Photo Contest: Monotone

PhotographyPosted by Staaan

Imagine what it would look like to see our world in a single colour tone; the trees, the cars, mountain landscapes, a view of the city, the serene atmosphere of the rural areas, etc. Would it be boring, less complicated, or still beautiful? Let’s find out!

Black and white photography is also a form of monotone photography (called monochrome). Monotone, however, means a single tone of any colour.

This contest is designed to let us see what life would look like from a single colour perspective. Take your best shots of different scenes, objects, traffic, humans, or anything and show us the result in a single colour tone of your choice. You can use the built-in settings of your camera, or use post-editing software.

To get some inspiration, have a look at this monotone contest we held on Pxleyes, 3 years ago:

Congratulations. This is a really fascinating photo. Are they small statues with smoke behind them? I am curious as to how you achieved this effect?

kyricom avatarLevel 13
kyricom replied to Skyangel :

Thank you. They are small toys, about 4 inches (10 cm) tall. I put them on some rocks in our back yard at night, and set a light behind them and off to the side a bit. Then, I sprayed some "smoke" (I have aerosol cans of it) between the light and the toys and took the shot.

Thanks for the explanation. It is very inspiring.

Warm Monotones.....Datania Waterfall ...Da Lat , Vietnam

Skyangel avatarLevel 15
Skyangel replied to Olga.L :

I am always in awe of photos of smooth flowing water because I know it is not easy to achieve without overexposing the water. You did a great job of the long exposure. The warm monotones tend to give it a hot feeling though. It makes me think it must have been a very hot day. I am curious about why you chose a warm tone and not a cool color to reflect the coolness of the water?

Olga.L avatarLevel 17Bronze award
Olga.L replied to Skyangel :

Hi, well, I did try a variety of colours including a very light blue, yet the trials didn't warm the cockles of my heart....b/w just looked oh so ordinary, mauve was interesting but the detail of the rocks was lost, a hint of blue also looked washed out. Only this warm tone seemed to highlight the detail of the rocks causing the image to pop into life. Colour, as you know, pulls emotions out of viewers and so the warmth of this waterfall adds........ warm colours are active and are more emotionally charged, add that to flowing water and that was the thinking behind this process. It's subjective, I know and isn't that the very point that makes photography so much fun. Your erudite comments are ALWAYS appreciated and opens my mind to alternatives and for this, I Thank you.

Skyangel avatarLevel 15
Skyangel replied to Olga.L :

I agree it's always subjective and in the end color is always the artist's choice. It's amazing how different colors can create different moods.

Mystical Pond, Da Lat , Vietnam

Skyangel avatarLevel 15
Skyangel replied to Olga.L :

The green tint is interesting and makes it look quite mystical but I think the filter you used for the background is distracting and causes confusion because the zig-zag patterns are all over the place and really don't look like water ripples at all. Were you trying to achieve a ripple effect?
return

However, in the end, any artistic effects are always a personal choice and very subjective so pay no attention to my personal likes and dislikes. As we all know, people can have totally opposite opinions when it comes to filters. πŸ™ƒ

Olga.L replied to Skyangel :

Skyangel avatarLevel 15
Skyangel replied to Olga.L :

Your welcome. I just imagined the background would look great with a ripple on the pond which had the stem of the flower in the middle of the ripple. Obviously the tutorial doesn't show you how to do that, but I could show you if we lived close enough to actually come and work on the same computer together.

Olga.L avatarLevel 17
Olga.L replied to Skyangel :

Hi and thank you for the critique. I was rather excited to find this new tool of smudging so I smudged and played with the background. I'm always trying to take the ordinary and push it over the top....sometimes I succeed, sometimes I don't. Adding ripples would have just made the image too vanilla for my eyes and unexciting. Remember that the lotus (or water lily) grows from mud and confusion below and only when it surfaces does it show tranquility ...so the turbulence you see behind the flower is indicative of that. Thank you for the link and your time.

Skyangel avatarLevel 15
Skyangel replied to Olga.L :

If the effect is to symbolize the underwater confusion, you definitely succeeded.

IEatRawEggs avatarLevel 16
IEatRawEggs

I like it, how did you make this?

Olga.L avatarLevel 17
Olga.L replied to IEatRawEggs :

Hi....here is what I did (it is really easy). In you photoshop there is a smudge tool, find it and just play with it. If you put it up to 100%...it will be too harsh. That background , nothing was done...it is the relections on the pond and I just smudged the beejeebees out of it. There you go....clear as mud right?.. πŸ˜ƒ

IEatRawEggs avatarLevel 16
IEatRawEggs replied to Olga.L :

Storm Approaching...Da Nang, Vietnam

Skyangel avatarLevel 15
Skyangel replied to Olga.L :

That storm cloud is fascinating because it almost looks like a huge wave about to break on the shore and drown the person. The very white area above the cloud tends to draw the eye to the top and right out of the picture though. Have you tried cloning it out? Not sure if would improve it or not but you could experiment and try.

Olga.L avatarLevel 17
Olga.L replied to Skyangel :

When I was working on this image that shard of bright light popped out but reminded me of a bolt of lightning. Indeed the eye is drawn to the brightest part of an image, yet to me , this"bolt of lightning" adds another dimension of impending danger or an element of surprise especially on a diagonal slant as it appears through most of the frame. That light is a living presence, so I would not clone it out. Thank you for your constructive critique and the time you took to study this image.

Skyangel avatarLevel 15
Skyangel replied to Olga.L :

Hmmm, the bright light area doesn't make me think of lightning at all. It just goes to show that different viewers can have totally opposite perceptions and opinions about the same photo.
