We've had some portrait contests on Pxleyes, but many years have passed since. Now we can continue this series. This is your chance to show yourself to your fellow friends over here.

You can go for the traditional portrait and include only your face (either from the side or front), with little distractions. Or, you can include more than just your face and make something abstract, glamorous or even surreal.

source:freeimages.com
— source:freeimages.com —

You can either take a selfie with your phone or let someone else take a photo of you, the photographer! No other people can be in the photo, so no group portraits. Facial attributes are allowed.

Let's get to know each other. Show us who's the face behind all those glorious photos! Because, let's face it, we are all curious to know!

Good luck!

PS: It's very important to vote on every entry, the more votes we get, the more accurate the rankings will be. Also, when you see something on someone's entry that can be improved, let them know. That way, we can learn new skills from each other!

Stuck in Vietnam created by Olga.L

After New Zealand, Vietnam is the second safest place to be during the COVID pandemic. We feel so fortunate to be in a country that is full of wonderful hospitable kind generous people and exotic food. Vietnam has a population of 97 million. Canada, my home country has a population of 37 million, one third of Vietnam. Yet, Vietnam has had 35 deaths and Canada........22,463.

What brought you to Vietnam?

A place I would love to visit one day

Olga.L avatarLevel 17
Olga.L replied to Staaan :

Here is the story in a nutshell, I will try to make it short.
1. We are Canadians
2. We retired and left Canada, lived in Mexico (Ajijic) for 3 years.
3. Took an around the world trip and found Thailand
4. Fell in love with Thailand
5. Moved to Thailand and lived there for 18 years
6. In the year 2020 we had purchased our ticket to fly into Toronto for June 17th but first we decided to visit Da Lat, Vietnam to avoid the terrible heat and pollution of Chiang Mai (Thailand).
7. We entered Vietnam March 10th and on March 11th the global pandemic was announced by the World Health Organization and all borders were sealed.
8. We have been stuck here for one full year.
9. It is our 4th time to Vietnam and if you ever want any information about the country let me know and I can fill you in.

A deep love for this country and her people brought us back. Hope I have answered your questions.

Oh interesting, so you are planning to move back to Thailand?

Olga.L avatarLevel 17

We need to get back to Thailand to gather our "shit"....then we will go back to Canada after being away for 21 years. It will be a culture shock. Difficult with quarantine hotels, and strict criteria to follow for both countries....and on top of it all I DON'T WANT TO LEAVE VIETNAM.

What about you? Where are you living or are you also 'stuck' somewhere?

Hi Olga. You are looking very Vietnamese with that hat on. You are also being very creative. Did you take photos of prints or are these just layers of different photos done in photoshop? Not that it matters, since the effect would be the same anyway. I was just wondering if you were practising your layer work. You are a beautiful woman and its good to see your many faces but the two on the right of the screen look exactly the same except for the color. One of those would have been enough but all the 4 shots are great anyway.

Older but not better created by Vibeke

Oh dear, I do not like self-portraits, and this has not changed my mind, but as we were going to a party last night and I was all cleaned up it seemed too good a chance not to take one. Yes, we can still go to parties here in New Zealand we are lucky enough to have been able to control Covid, thanks to a strong government and being an island surrounded by a lot of ocean. I did love PXLeyes, still taking lots of photos so should share a few more here. Great to see some old friends and meet some new ones.

Hello Vibeke. It's so nice to see you again. You look gorgeous all dolled up for your party. I don't like taking self portraits either. I know a few photographers who hate taking their own portraits, but other people never seem to see us the same way as we see ourselves. It's wonderful that you can still go to parties and enjoy the company of good friends. We all got older but I am sure we must all be better too because they say practise makes perfect and we certainly all have plenty of practice at getting older. Age supposedly makes us wiser and more experienced at everything so like fine wine, we all do get better with age. I look forward to seeing your work again.

Ohhh how I searched high and low for Ignaz Philippe Semmelweis's statue in your beautiful Budapest.... AND I FOUND IT ! He was ahead of his time with breakthrough science saying that one must hand wash to prevent puerperal fever. He was a pioneer and we are grateful for his existence, for he made a difference to this world of ours.

Your self-portrait tells us a lot about your personality. It shows a person who loves the outdoors a humble gentle soul as your eyes are cast down. I cannot help but wonder what it is that you are holding in your left hand, my eyes keep going there trying to figure it out. In portrait photography or any other kind of photography if you have information like that on the margin what happens is the viewer's eyes go there, trying to figure out and complete the photo and oftentimes go out of the frame. We as photographers must try everything within our power to keep our viewers in the photo. Your horizon line is nice and straight and the angle of your body is not stiff but ever so welcoming. Lovely to meet you and I do remember you from Pxyleyes.

Hi everyone, My name is Angelica. Some of my friends call me Angel. I like to play around with my camera and photoshop manipulations. George55 avatarLevel 10
George55 replied to Skyangel :

Thanks Angelica. Staaan told me that my style and my work is recognizable even if I do not put my name in my entries.... and that is not anomymous... I think, after many years of using photoshop... a style in our works have to come out... I remember Cornelia Mladenova.... her work was unique and personal,,,, but yes, it can be recognized right away... a lovely style.... No..... I think even if a work, yours, mine, or some one else... is recognizable... it is still our work and we vote for the work and detail shown.... and appreciate participation.... I wont hesitate if if I see something that can help us... .as you did in my other entries... I improved my work... and it showed... thanks again.... happy to be here....

Skyangel avatarLevel 15
Skyangel replied to George55 :

I agree that various artist have different styles and eventually we learn to tell who did what even when no names are on entries. I think we can always learn something from each other and often some other artist sees what we personally overlook because we often end up staring at our own work for so many hours, so its always great to get constructive feedback from fresh eyes.

Brilliant to change this into monochrome. There is so much beauty here from a technical perspective you have given the full range of tonal contrasts....black to white and in between. There are approximately 245 shades of gray and you have them (all) and so the image pops. The story your self-portrait tells us about you is that you are approachable and helpful to all who cross your path and I crossed your path some 11 years ago and know that to be true. It's a strong post and endearing.

Skyangel avatarLevel 15
Skyangel replied to Olga.L :

Thank you Olga. 245 shades of gray? Who counted them? What about all the shades between the shades? Do you know the human eyes can be tricked regarding color shades and not be able to tell the difference between a light and dark shade? I find that totally fascinating and it just goes to show we can't trust our own eyes. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2015/02/27/12-fascinating-optical-illusions-show-how-color-can-trick-the-eye/

Behind the Paper created by Skyangel

I promised Zizounai an updated version of the woman behind the paper. The sketch on the paper is a computer generated one. If anyone wants to know how to do one of those, search for sketch effect on youtube. There are a few different ways to do them. Then you print your face out on a A4 piece of paper, tear it in half and have some fun with it in your photography.

Painted face created by Skyangel

Painting ones own face is an artistic self portrait. Maybe it can be called surreal since we don't actually walk around the street looking like this? Anyway, Its all natural face paint, not painted in photoshop at all. I put the face paint on my face as well as on the brush and took the photo after two days of frustation and learning how to use my self timer and focusing correctly. This week was the first time I ever used the self timer on my camera. Olga got all my complaining emails about it and I thank her for all her help with tips for focusing on one self when you are nowhere near the camera. Then I obviously changed some of it to BW just so the colored part will be the main focus. So here is the result of an amateur face painting artist taking an amateur photo. 🤪

JUST A LITTLE OLDER... created by George55

Hello.... many of you must know my name... I was in pxleyes for a long time.... my favorite place to show my work and meet many good friends. I was born in Mexico. I left my country, and went to live in the USA after my mother died. Looking to get my life together was not easy.... mostly not knowing the language of a foreign country... Went to school to study English, graduated from High School, and studied graphic arts and Graphic design... it was when I was introduced to Photoshop... a very old version... but I loved, and after school, i continued trying to learn the basics... and now... I try to learn more... I am not a Spring chicken any more... I have 72 years and still think with a fresh mind. I came back to my country Mexico after retired in USA. I live with my nephews family now. I am happy to return to my roots... as a matter of fact... did not work with Photoshop for a long time... since pxleyes closed... but a friend of mine, stayed with me... even living far, far away... he helped me to get Photoshop 2021 and it is what I am using now... if you read this.... THANKS SO MUCH.... FOR BEING MY FRIEND.... You know, who you are... Well... let...s do Photoshop... nice to be back....

Hola querido viejito!....We lived in Ajijic for 3 years and the mariachis of Jalisco need to be considered the 9th wonder of the world. Nice to meet you.

The compositional style of this self-portrait, with you popping into the frame works and the eye contact you have with the camera, and us, is a good strong point. The warm tones to this image further draws us in closer and makes for a more intimate feeling. You did use a skin soften filter and some of the viewers will like the effect, some will not. Skin soften does give you a dreamy look. The background is simple so that the subject really does pop out. There is a white spot on your tooth and my eye keeps going there ....acccchhhh. In the lower left-hand corner (viewer's L) you have a smudge of a brownish colour that needs to be blended in so that it is not so pronounced. Please have a look on your L shoulder area, right where the gray sweater and skin meet....see that on the margin there...? You need to bring down the background to touch that margin. This is a well focused self portrait that speaks to us of gentleness and life well lived.

George55 avatarLevel 10
George55 replied to Olga.L :

Dear Olga.... the photo is not manipulated using skin soft filter or any other filters... it is a real shot of myself.... my phone does a good job taking photos.... the white spot in my tooth is a reflection of a light from somewhere.... and the brownish spots are the color of the wall.... I did not play with painting or blend colors.... as I say.. .it is a real photo.... as for making changes... I will leave as it is.... because there is no way to delete and post another image with adjusted colors... Also I do not want to re....entry this image... thanks for comment....

Yes, the area of Ajijic... in the Chapala Lake .... is beautiful... I came to leave in Jalisco, where I was born... and I am happy with cities and surroundings.... Mariachi music, is something to hear with the heart......

Staan. I appreciate your comment. It is true, through years of working with Photoshop, you develop a personal style and it shows in m y works. It is true, people can recognize it... it could not be anonymous.... I recognize styles from other participants artists, and I know who is behind those works... It does not matter to me, your style, your work. I think it is the time that you spend behind the drawing screen and keyboard, trying to make your work better and yours. It is like in the world of Art..... You see the Monalisa... and you know... who is behind the painting.... you see... Starry Night... and you know it is a Van Gogh... same with Chagall... Monet... Manet... Pizarro... Raphael.... Picasso and Dhali... O even Frida Khalo or Georgia O.Keefe.... personal styles... personal minds.... Anonymous... not really..... I thing Art is just a personal inspiration.....

From the casual and quirky pose to the natural hues of the skin to the warm tones of your post this image draws us in...it is intimate and tells us of your playful nature. In focus, well contrasted and tells a story that meeting you would be a pleasure. The diagonal bias adds electricity. BE STILL the beating of my heart..... 🤩

The background of your image is perfect but you need to clone out that human form right behind you so that only you are in the frame. Cloning him out would be very easy for your background is not complicated and has a lovely blur, just remember when you do clone use a very large size and mid soft brush. The comfortable natural spontaneous shot is sharp in focus the focal length is well adjusted to show a natural form. The composition, with subject-centered works with ample negative space all around, although a bit more at the top would not have hurt for it feels like he is about to hit his head. The subject is well lit but I would not have minded him being just a tad brighter to really pop him out. The eyes, face, and determination are clearly seen bringing us an emotive response. Although most pundits will tell you to never crop or amputate a portrait image at the joints (your knees) I rather like that bit of knee shown and a tighter crop up would not have worked. Overall this is an image that engages the viewers easily even tho most have not done a half marathon but we can feel this photograph right into our joints. It's a lovely post, thank you.

Staaan avatarLevel 19
Staaan replied to Olga.L :

Thanks for the feedback! I didn't take that photo, but I might pass it on to the photographer :)

I am not sure how to remove that guy behind me, I already cropped one out on the left from the original photo, but I don't have Photoshop (only Gimp)

It's unfortunate that the legs are not in it, here's another picture from the same race, legs included: https://i.imgur.com/V5GmJ1u.png

Olga.L avatarLevel 17
Olga.L replied to Staaan :

That is also a nice photo. The tilt of the horizon line gives it extra ooomph and I know it breaks rules but rules were made to be broken and this is a shot that proves that point. The tilt adds a lot of energy. Also great is that you have no one else in the image except the runner and the struggle is seen on his face which contributes to the whole story. Eye connection is spot on. Why don't you put this one up as well and see how the members vote? What a dilemma to have such great photos. Lucky you.

Staaan avatarLevel 19
Staaan replied to Olga.L :

I'm going to stick with this one, folks can checkout Zizounai's version where she made the guy behind me magically disappear :)

grasshopper1 avatarLevel 11
grasshopper1 replied to Staaan :

Awesome shot and your looking good. There are cloning tools in Gimp. And I think if you spent some time with it you could get rid of the other person. And if that doesn't work, you could slightly blur everything around you and that will make you a better focal point.
But action shots like this one, doesn't always work out the way we want.
They become "it is, what it is, shot" But inn your case, it's still a very good shot of you.

25 KM of pain? Why put yourself through such pain? Number 3333 in a race? How many were in the event? You are obviously a far more fit and sporty person than I am. Where did you end up in the race? I would not have made the first 5 KM. It takes me over an hour to walk 3 KM but I take my time and enjoy the scenery.

The euphoria after the race outweighs the pain you go through :) The beautiful nature you go through also helps endurance.

YOU MUST KNOW YOUR BEAUTY
Never give up!
If something doesn’t go that way, then it will go that way. If you don't go today, then go tomorrow.
If you can't jump high anymore, it's okay. Say it, oops, and walk up the sidewalk.
Man dies little by little. With what you give up, you threw a piece of yourself into the mine.
Never forget to laugh!
Laughter is the best prevention against all diseases (except coughs).
Don't forget to laugh - at yourself.
Man is sometimes clumsy and does stupid things. Finished single cabaret. You can laugh at yourself for free.
Never polish yourself!
Especially in front of your relatives, neighbors and acquaintances.
They already have a picture of you in them anyway, and you don't have time to change that.
And then why?
Never give up on anything!
Indulge yourself in pleasures. If you want something, get it.
Costs money? So what? You have saved enough in your life, your desire is no longer a luxury yacht. Make that half pound of strawberries or that bottle of good wine embrace you without remorse!
Never let yourself be looted!
Your children, grandchildren, relatives will live without you. Don’t give up on yourself because of their needs.
Let them fight, as you once did.
You are never old to anything!
Don’t be ashamed if you’ve fallen in love with someone, if you’re new to the computer now, if you buy an unusual-looking outfit. Of course, behave according to your age, because if you are very laughing, society will take it out of itself. Because society is older and more mischievous than you are.
Never just plan for tomorrow!
Have long-term plans. This is not a question of money.
Write your memoirs (or say them on a voice recorder) and don’t worry if your first sentences are awkward because your story will bring out the performance in you.
Vacation where you live. People pay a fortune to look at your city through the eyes of a tourist. Look at it, it's almost free for you.
Take advantage of your opportunities and train once a year. Remember, you can always find new things.
If you’re an atheist, listen to a Mass, if you’re a Christian, go to a synagogue, and if you’re a Jew, look around the Basilica.
Never think that life is unfair!
Don’t you think you would have had more, but if you did, it doesn’t matter today? This was thrown out by the machine. Shrug your shoulders and gather the beautiful moments, the uplifting moments, and remember those you loved. Love life because that’s the only way you can leave with calm dignity once, in the hopefully distant future.
Then we are reborn!

Whats RBF? If you had made the black one green I would understand RBG but I am totally ignorant of the meaning of RBF.
It has a scary feeling of darkness about it. I would not like to meet this character in a dark alley. It makes me think of a wanted criminal or a murderer. I am sure you are not any of those things but the portrait as well as the title just conveys that kind of atmosphere. You would make a great evil character in a dark crime movie. No offense meant. It's just what the portrait conveys to my imagination.
I just googled RBF and found "resting bitch face" in an urban dictionary. I seem to suffer from that as well when my face is expressionless.

Me....times three ! created by Olga.L

Today, March 10th, marks one year of having entered Vietnam. On March 11th, the World Health Organization called a pandemic and our world, as we once knew it changed. We have been (happily) stuck here for one full year. This photo was taken at Crazy House, in Da Lat, Vietnam (the highlands where it is eternally spring-like weather). It's a very technically correct multiplicity photo. You did a wonderful job of combining three photos into one. It also shows us your creative and playfully fun side. You were also lucky to have time and space to take all those shots. The place was obviously not too crowded with many other people wanting to take shots as well unless you cloned them all out? Anyway, as I told you in email, I personally think a portrait should be more of a closeup of a persons face than a long distance shot. Will you take up my challenge to do a closeup of your own face? A spontaneous shot was taken when the world was "normal". Yes, that is a good thing that the background is "fussy" and I keep looking at the bra strap showing on the lady behind you, for some reason that has caught my eye. The composition of you coming into the frame adds to that spontaneous feel. Your happiness has been well caught in softness.

I really like your quirky breaking of "rules" and that tilt is becoming. You have a good range of tones from white to black and many shades of gray. The white behind you and lower R could have been brought down by using your highlight lever in RAW, but it could be that you were gunning for that high exposed look. The hair over your right shoulder seems not in focus at all but you did get your eyes nice and sharp and that look is intriguing and adds mystery as to "I wonder what she was thinking of?"

Hello little "old" you. You definitely don't look old at all. You look more like you would be around my daughters age. That makes me old although I really don't feel old either. I agree with all the previous comments when it comes to your portait. I am just wondering if the "smudge" on your hair on the left of the screen might be due to a smudge on your lens? Maybe it needs cleaning? Sometimes we tend to overlook these things.

I presume it is a self portrait in the drone? I would like to know how you managed to take a shot like that while working the drone and without getting any other camera in the shot?

grasshopper1 replied to Skyangel :

Thank you for your interest. I took a pic of me with the drone.I took a pic of the drone. I cut and pasted my pic over the lens of the drone and wah ya. :)

Retired Life created by grasshopper1

I don't have many pics of me. I'm always taking them of other people. You know how it is. My son took this of me. It is special. I had been real sick, over weight, and in pain for about two years. I decided to do something about it. For the next year I lost over 50 pounds. This is my first time out on my ski after all the weight off. A new start... It had been a long time waiting for it. Now all my checkups come back great. This was just before covid hit.

Nice to meet you and to read about your journey to health and wholeness. 50 pounds IS SOMETHING to crow about and I take my hat off to you. You look too young to be retired...never mind, onwards to the photo critique. It is a lovely clear, well-focused snap of you and the sky behind you is not being very cooperative this day. Did you know that the new 2021 Photoshop offers a "sky filter" and is a lot of fun. I see your son has an artistic streak for he has not composed you in dead center, and that composition gives our eyes permission to have a look at where you are about to jet ski. It is a "new start" for you and the whole world....I wonder what the "new normal" will look like....ahhh well, at least we are all still on this side of the grass! ☺️

Thank you for the kind words.
I actually got carded when I got my shots last month. My wife was a little annoyed they didn't card her.lol
Yea, I'm not trying to win anything with this pic. I just wanted to put it out there. Thanks for the tip on Photoshop, but I switched to Gimp and Raw Therapee last month, so I'm in the learning curve bubble right now. Thanks :)

GIMP surely is not as user-friendly as Photoshop

grasshopper1 avatarLevel 11
grasshopper1 replied to IEatRawEggs :

No it's not...and has a challenging learning curve, but it's free and has everything I need. it's tough to let go of Photoshop, but I'm getting there.

Hi there. It sounds like you did a great job of losing weight and improving your health. It's a comforting thing to know you have a clean bill of health from the doctors. You are obviously enjoying life and having fun on your jet ski. I read you mentioned that you switched from Photoshop to a program called Raw Therapee. I had to google it since I had not heard of it before. How do you like it? Does it do the same things Photoshop does? I know that some people are looking for alternatives to Photoshop because of the monthy subscription getting to be an expense they can no longer afford with all the Covid problems, so its always good to get feedback about other programs which are similar. Also what does getting "carded" mean? I am in Australia and have not heard that expression before.

grasshopper1 avatarLevel 11
grasshopper1 replied to Skyangel :

Hey,
Getting carded means someone checks your id for your correct age. They actually didn't believe I was 65 :)
I just started using Raw Therapee. For the same reason you mentioned plus a couple others. 1. It's free and open source app. When it is updated it's free. Which is a good thing when your retired and on fixed income.
2. It does have a few more things then Photoshop but you need Gimp to go with it.
When you open a NEF or raw file it will start out in Raw Therapee. When your done making all your adjustments.(and there are tons of them) then it will open in GIMP where you can finished it off as in Photoshop.
It's takes a long time to get use to how things are done. Spending a lot of time watching videos and learning the ropes. I've already seen a difference with the finished product.
I'm not a professional photographer so I don't need the top programs to accomplish what I want to create. These programs Have everything I need plus more.
Once I get passed the LEARNING CURVE..ugh..I should be OK
Open Source software is the way to go :)

Skyangel avatarLevel 15Heart award
Skyangel replied to grasshopper1 :

Thanks for all that info. Well you don't look 65. You look more like you might be in your 50's, but I guess at our age, ( I am 67) it's hard to guess someones age for various reasons.
I agree that anything free or open source is the way to go for us retirees. I am always very thankful for all the people who put up free youtube videos to teach us things for free. We can never stop learning something new as long as we remain curious and interested.
