Photo Contest: Fog

PhotographyPosted by Staaan

Fog is simply caused by the suspension of water droplets or ice crystals in the air. Although this phenomenon has affected human activities in various ways such as shipping and travel, it remains one of the most beautiful sights to behold.

This photo contest is designed for you to appreciate this great work of nature by capturing beautiful moments of fog in your preferred landscape. Choose your best vantage point, take your best shots, and post them here with a description to explain where this photo was taken.

To get some inspiration, have a look at this contest on Pxleyes from 11 years ago:

http://www.pxleyes.com/photography-contest/16698/fog.html

This entry from WYSIWYG got first place out of 67 entries:

Technology has evolved rapidly in those 11 years, so let's see what we can do with fog in our photos these days!

Good luck!

I actually like this shot a lot. It leaves you wanting to see who it is and what is farther down the track.Someone just walking out of the fog..did you know this person or did you just catch it when you were crossing the tracks?
Pretty cool.

This picture is very nice but it's really a pity that the tree is too centered, it would have been shifted slightly on the right and the photo would have been perfect!

I would like to agree with your comment. The photo is lovely but the compositional style could have been improved upon because as it is there is a lot of visual confusion centered in the middle. I do love the mood that has been caught . Thank you.

Lovely shot.

Though the tree stump in the foreground grabs your initial attention, the road leads your eyes towards the fog covered windmill which has just enough definition to cut through the fog which is the subject of the contest. Well done!

This photo reminds me of the winter nights in Philadelphia as a kid. Walking through the park feeling cold, scared lonely, but at the same time weirdly enjoying those times. I guess because I knew that I was eventually heading home and snuggled in a happier environment. I like all 3...great shots.

I commented on this earlier but I guess it never got saved.
I thought this was a great shot. I love the composition, well balanced. The shot immediately wants to engulf you in the middle of the trees. I can squint mt eyes some and can imagine them looking down at me. The picture also displays or points to a professional behind the lens. Same quality of work as the fish grouping shot from last contest, not just lucky shooting. :)

Wow, love this

Maybe try to have the sun in the center of the frame

Olga.L avatarLevel 17
Olga.L replied to IEatRawEggs :

Placing that sun in middle with a square format would have made a nice CD cover. The continuance of trees makes for good symmetry and you could have filled the frame entirely. The glow from the sun which is so brilliantly diffused would have kept our attention on the image. You could have kept the sun in that all important grid line (to the side) in square format...HOWEVER.... that was not what you wanted. Don't you just love it when other photographers redo your image for you....ha. In this image, the vastness and beauty of a foggy landscape has been caught and the icing on the cake is that sun popping up warming the entire image. Your creative streak has won in this debate. Lovely post. Thank you.

I liked this shot. It not that the fog is the central object, but it helps us to focus on the rest of the picture. The house, street, fence, grass area..all those lines lead me to the fog. I guess you can look at it as just the house ,and that would work, or just the fog and how it shadows in an eeriness and that would work. I think there is a lot going on here and you've done a very good job of displaying it. :)

You most certainly caught an atmospheric feel with this very dense fog cover. However, the image appears flat and washed out with no tonal values apparent, and had you not mentioned the ducks I would not have seen them for they are lacking in contrast. The scene which you have caught, which is dimly lit (fog acts as a softbox diffusing light) requires longer exposure times and had you dialed in more positive exposure compensation we may have been able to see the ducks. It is a lovely feel moody picture.

I am rather taken with this strong image. I love the fact that you have strong tonal values and that the focal anchor is the gate where we can visually rest. The framing of the overhanging tree branches further pulls our eye in and gives delight. Your exposure settings are very excellent with capturing foreground and fog in the distance. The image is sharp and well-composed and balanced. I know you would like some constructive criticism....I have nothing to add. You need to do three things to this image. Sign it, matte it and frame it....it is beautiful. Thank you.

rijnko replied to Olga.L :

Thanks, Olga, for your comment. Funny enough, your description of the picture makes it seem like I took it with all that deliberation, when I just walked by and thought: hey, nice scene, let me try and shoot it. Only thing is I often try to follow the rule of thirds.

I like this photo for the surreal unnatural look it offers...a lone figure stepping into the unknown. Sometimes, a title makes the difference between a sale of a photograph or naught. I like your title. Photographically speaking the hard angular lines give a dynamic feel (an exciting feel) and whether that "Scot" is leaning plays with us visually.
The compositional style with a square format and centered lone figure works for me.

Could this be taken as a "juxtaposition"? The contrast between your image and your comment.."life as normal"?
If it is then it brings new life to how I go forward in viewing it. :)
