Selective coloring has been made popular by Ansel Adams. He knew the human eye is automatically attracted to brighter parts of a photograph. He used this knowledge to put emphasis on certain subjects in his photos. He figured this out in his darkroom where he processed his landscape photos.

In this contest we're going to do a variation of that, but with modern tools of course! You can either take a color photo and turn part of it into grayscale. Or, you can take a grayscale photo and manually colorize part(s) of it.

To give an example, have a look at the winner of our latest selective blue contest on Pxleyes

Won by Still26

The end result should be the same. A photo that is in grayscale for at least 50% and uses color to put emphasis on the parts that you consider most important.

Good luck!

Wayne, I love love love the minimalistic feel to this presentation. Like the way the bars lead the eye to the focal point of the shoes. Well seen and well done, nice tight crop. You do have dust spots on your sensor and they show up on the white aspect of the image!

Lovely and mysterious , almost other worldly! Some might tell you that the sky is over saturated but I feel it compliments the silhouette. Nice entry.

grasshopper1 avatarLevel 11
grasshopper1 replied to Olga.L :

Ahhhh...thank you for noticing. Yes, I did over saturate it,and your right it is to accentuate the shape/design of the tower. But I did not do it for this contest. It's part of a collection of this same object but with different color saturation's. They are all part of a piece I'm working on that uses different color pieces/images to make one whole image.
It's a work still in progress, but on hold for the moment.

Olga.L replied to grasshopper1 :

Ahhh....are you going to make it Andy Warhol style?.....and did you change the colour of the sky in each one? Sounds intriguing.

grasshopper1 avatarLevel 11
grasshopper1 replied to Olga.L :

Yes..that is where I am stalled. Andy Warhol and how many pieces or in another style...my way. I've done a piece as a Warhol image called 10 Sheri's. It's a lot of work and I'm not mentally there to work on anything complex. Thanks again for your interest and input,it makes a difference.

Olga.L avatarLevel 16
Olga.L replied to grasshopper1 :

I would love to see your Sheri's and to learn of your technique, hmmmm maybe I will ask Frank if this would be possible to do on this site. Also, PLEASE, feel free to critique any and all of my entries, I would appreciate it greatly.

That blue window really pulls on our eye and because we have to travel up to anchor on the pane it makes the church look even larger! I feel you could have brought out some detail in the black doorway by using shadow highlight lever...what do you think?

iquraishi replied to Olga.L :

A cool dude indeed and a spontaneous catch on your part. There is a blow out on the foot area which could have been pulled down in camera raw by pulling down the highlight lever somewhat. Love the natural feel to this post.

iquraishi avatarLevel 9
iquraishi replied to Olga.L :

thanks for your comment Olga and yes my daughter is cool, the pose was her idea. About the foot area unfortunately I didn't shoot this in raw, so that detail is lost.
